I have a 1990 With 30K miles. The alternator is wining and i assume it is a front bearing..I want to keep the car as stock looking as possible so I am curious if there is a rebuild kit for it. I would like to keep my old one. Has anyone rebuilt one? Is it a big task? About how much ar e the parts? I assume once it is apart I should replace the brushes and elec parts. i have a presss. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks
PS I have no clue what amperage a stock 1990 L98 alternator puts out..I info here would be great
The bearings are pressed into the case I believe and you can buy the bearings at auto stores or Bearing Inc. (I think they changed their name a few years ago, but any place that sells bearings can sell you one).

, here's a suggestion: replace the front "ball bearing" assembly with the equivalent "roller bearing" assembly. i'm no mechanical engineer, but i never understood why the factory didn't do this...
to the OP, if i'm guessing right, its a 105 amp unit. the factory service manual has everything you need to know about rebuilding the altenator. if it anything like my 85's, its a fairly easy job. there are 4 basic maintenance parts, front & rear bearings, brushes, and voltage regulator. if the altenator is functioning properly, just replace the brushes, and of course, the front bearing.
The alternator on your car is easy to disassemble, but the stator has to be unsoldered. Then it's just being meticulous while you have it apart and reassembling.
You might need an impact wrench to remove the pulley nut since it's difficult to hold an allen wrench and twist the nut off with a wrench while holding the alternator firmly with your third hand.
be sure the battery lead is very tight as this tends to vibrate loose and arc.
Thanks to all...I rebuilt it and it was a breeze. I bought a HD regulator and Rectifier and the rest were standard parts. As for replacing the front bearing with a roller bearing, that would not be a good idea. The front bearing is a radial and axial bearing. This you can not get from a roller bearing..
Again, thanks to all

...like i said, i'm not a mechanical engineer, but i 'm thinking that all the load is radial, with very little, if any axial load - ??? - oh well, i guess the designers are a tad smarter than me... anyway, a big "atta-boy" on the rebuild!
