I have a '96 LT4, R/H cat is bad. I want to replace both with preferably a high flow cat. I have looked at the magnaflow's but they are apparently ceramic insides and don't last long. They also require fabrication for a '96 as no direct fit cats are available. Rather than pay someone $300 labor to fabricate pipes to install universals I thought maybe there were some headers that were available that I could just clamp some cats to and in so doing put the labor money into some headers. The rest of my exhaust system is in decent shape and I don't want to blow a huge amount of money on it. I would like to get out for under $700 for headers and cats if possible.

Two years ago I took my 95A4 and put Stainless works LT headers & RT hiflow stainless cats on but kept the stock exhaust and have been very happy with it. The headers give the exhaust a much deeper sound and it sounds really nice.
The package however is more than you are looking to spend. There was a group purchase that I participated in and I think that it was close to $1200 for the whole package and that did not include installation.
Have any of you that used long tube headers and high flow cats had any problems with the check engine light coming on?
A guy at HottExhaust.com told me that sometimes cars will flow too much with headers and never reach light-off temp (whatever that is) for the cats. Then the check engine light will come on. It can also be caused by the cats being too far downstream from the motor allowing too much cooling before the exhaust reaches the cats.
If you've seen that prob, what did you do to get around it?

Yes, this is a known issue with headers. Exhaust temp, typically 600+, is not reached with non-heated O2's. The fix is heated O2's, however, I'm still getting an intermittent Check Engine light but, haven't done the diagnostic to figure out which O2 is the source. There are aftermarket heated O2 kits which I have installed that have the heated O2's and wiring harness. Some examples:

I have high flow cats (3") and EM long tube headers...no problem
