GM Hot Cam or Comp cam look-alike???
I am rebuilding my LT1 (383) but to LT4 specs.
I am Looking at a Comp Cam which looks very simular to the HOT cam. It's .050 Intake is 218 degrees (same as GM) and the exhaust is 224 degrees. (GM is 228 deg). Their lift is very simular when correcting both to 1.6 rockers. Comp cam claims to have super-duper profiles. Which is better? Or is there any signaficant differance?

There is probably no real significant difference. The 224 on the back side would probably favor a larger exhaust valve than the 228.
What you are going to hear soon is that this is not enough cam for a 383, if you want a 1/4 mile car than its not enough. If you want to drive it on the street it is plenty. I have a duplicate LT4 hotcam grind, 1.6 lifters, in my 383 and don't think I would want any more for a street car. Nice and lumpy.

I assume you'll be porting your LT1 heads and upgrading the springs.
I started out having an LT4 Hot Cam installed on my 383 89FX3 stroker but replaced it before engine installation w/a custom grind CC single pattern 224/224 cam w/ .56x/.56x lift (1.6RRs) based on AFR & Comp Cams recommendation.
But I'm sure I would have been happy with the LT4 Hot Cam.
The nice thing about the GMPP LT4 Hot Cam is its .525/.525 lift gives very good flow, but doesn't overwhelm a good .550 max lift spring set.
And it will only set you back about $200.

IMO that cam is too small for a daily driven 355.

For valves/heads, I,m installing TrickFlow,s version of the LT4 heads with 195 cc intake runners and 2.02 intake valves ans 1.60 exhaust valves.
The Comp cam number is 07-502-8. I was told that it was about as agressive as I could go without loosing vacuum and taking away drivability from the car. It will primarily be my daily-driver with maybe an occasional trip down the drag strip just to see what it will do.

If you want to go for a small cam in the Hot Cam range have you looked at Comp's 503 or 305?

I can't see anyone finding the 305 too radical for a 383.

I ran the hotcam in a 383 LT1 for a long time with no complaints. It passed California emissions, idled great at 950, didn't over heat with the AC on, my wife could drive it to the store, etc...
However, given my positive experience with the hot cam, I would still recommend something a bit bigger. The CC 305 is a good choice if you are looking for something around the range of a hotcam.
I have a much larger XFI cam in the 350 that I have now, and it idles and drives 90% as well as the hotcam did in my 383. With the extra cubes of the 383, I wouldn't hesitate at all to run the larger XFI cam that I have now. Specs on my cam are .571/.576, 230/236, 113 LSA, 109 ICL, and 57 degrees of overlap.
If you don't have springs that can handle the lift, the CC305 is probably what I would recommend. If the .540-ish lift of the CC305 is still too much for your springs, then the hotcam would be my next choice.
There are also some smaller cams out there from the Lloyd Elliot/Bret Bauer camp that seem to be working really well. The specs sound odd at first, but you can't deny the power they are making with what looks like a really small cam. It might be worth it to give Lloyd a call or PM him on here. His screen name is nightrain66 or something like that and his website is www.eportworks.com.

Bullet Cams does Lloyds cams now. But not because Bret's cams arent as good, they are both fine cam companies. Bullet just can offer the cams at cheaper prices to help drive down the package costs. Makes Elliot's packages a much better deal than what they are.
383 street car? i wouldnt hestitate to go 230 on the intake lobe depending on what intake you use. 230 is as large as you really should go on a super street friendly 383. I have 230 on my car with a large exhaust split and its very tame onthe street even with a 109 lsa. Makes peak power at 6300, shift by 6500. Perfect
