I have an 88' Automatic with a shift kit, when I engage Drive, the car stiffens up [because of load im guessing] but it makes a mechanical clinking noise. it also does this when accelerating and decelerating at low speed [like stop signs in my neighborhhod]. Any guesses?
My mechanic said it may be the front brake pads hitting the the carrier, but it sound like it's from the rear?

Sounds like it could be your exhaust heat sheilds rattling maybe? But you said it happens when in los speeds and when you shift into drive, could this be a bad torque converter issue??
Well when I shift into drive, the car grabs instantly, and makes a "clink" sound. When I'm driving [I have to be acce/decel, not staying constant speed] i get a slightly quieter noise, and it happens every few seconds. The car shifts very smooth when i don't get on it.

- Get someone who can help
- Get on a well or somewhere with this holes on the ground where you can go down and inspect yout car from under (how are this called ??????)
- Jack the car,4 wheels on the air
- Get in and test in on the air, while your friend watch from underneath where the noise comes from.-
- If your friend, knows how to drive and is experienced with C4s tell him to operate it
and you go inspect from underneath.-
You'll find where the noise is coming from instantly
