87 alternator wires?

87 alternator wires?
What are the three wires that connect to the top of the alterenator. I think they are black, blue, and brown. Also, why do the corvettes have a three wire connector as opposed to most typical chevy alternator the only have two? I think my alternator is bad and i have a basic chevy alternator that i might try to use? Could this work?

The three wires are red, brown, and blue. The red wire powers the voltage regulator inside the alternator. The brown wire goes to the charge light on the dash (lights up when alternator voltage is too low or too high). The blue wire supplies power to the coolant fans if the battery fails. Can't help with the Chevy alternator, it might be useable, but its best to use the proper alternator. As to why the vette has only three wires, you'll have to ask the vette engineers.
