I have an 89. The tint on the top has bubbles, dings, marks, etc. I'm not 100% sure but I think the top is plastic. Has anyone stripped the old tinting and redid it? Any comments, tricks, suggestions?
I recently did my 94 top. The old coating was flaking off, had some minor scratches and looked very unsightly. I almost bought a new one but thought I'd try to fix it up first. The worse that could happen would be that it got messed up and I'd have to get a new one anyway ;) But it turned out very well.
I sanded off the old clear coat starting with an 800 grit sandpaper (be very careful with this one), then 1000, then 1500. Recoated the top with an automotive clear coat from a spray can, gave it a few coats (4-5). I then began finishing it just like an automotive paint job - finish sanding, and buffing with a high speed buffer.
Looks like new and I saved a bundle. I've heard of other people doing the same thing and they all seem to get the same results. Good luck!
OOppppppssss, just reread the post. Think my solution might not work for you. Thought you were talking about the outside condition and not the tint coming off from the inside ..... sorry, guess it's a bit early for me to be posting
