Default LED back lights repair?

In trying to get the 4 lights behind the speedo/tach to work in my 84 i find i might need more help. I have confirmed power getting to the lights at the connector and opened up the cluster. I switched out all 4 lights/sockets with known good ones from my 87 but still no lights. It looks like the post going from the front board to the rear board must have gotten hot at one point since the white connector they slide into has turned brown on the edge that the light circuit uses and 2 of the bulb sockets are discolored as well. Every-thing else in the LCD cluster is working perfectly just hard to see with-out the lights.
Is there a simple repair with-out sending the cluster in for expensive overhaul?
Is there any way that i can eliminate the resistors(?) in the first part of the rear board and install LEDs? I know that they will not dim and brighten but i could easily live with a happy medium brightness. I think it would be much cooler on the boards but have no clue how it might be done. Please chime in with ideas on repair or upgrading to LEDs.
