I am looking to replace my hood latches with pins, has anyone done this? andy advice? Pics appreciated. I am also considering modifying my hood for more clearance, has anyone done this? Pics appreciated.
I did it to my 96; it was pretty straight forward. Removed the latching hardware and cables. I made plates that span across the latch opening. The pin is bolted to this. It goes into the hole in the hood where the factory spring loaded pin used to be. I installed the pins, put some grease on the ends, then lowered it. This marked the proper place to drill the center hole. Then I just riveted the scuff plates on. A pretty straight forward project, and I sleep better at night knowing I won't have an issue getting the hood open if I really need to (aka fire).
If the conversion is going to be permanent, consider removing
the latching hardware for a modest reduction in weight and c/g.
If this is a mod to address issues with the release cable then do
you know about DaMailMan's tip - adding hand release cables that
lie in the vent area of the cowl for easy activation of the latches?
That is a sweet tip however that is not the reason. I hear on more race than street cars if you get a underhood fire, one of the first issues is the inability to open the hood. I am also going to cut the center out of the hood and section in 2-3 inches of breathing space. I am going to consider controlling air flow in a nascar fashion.

That's exactly what I want to do to my hood. It looks really heavy; some light weight louvers would get the weight down and get some air out from the engine compartment.
I like the way the cold air is ducted in the filter from the back of the hood at the windshield. I want to try to get a good fresh air charge that way. My car is more of a purpose built street car. I have a carbed 383 with max ported dart heads and a light weight rotating assembly. A well built 700r4 with a 3600 rpm stall by TCS. It has a 3.73 gear and GS A-Mod wheels. I have a best 1/8 mile time of 7.72 and I drive it to and from the track. I want to do some SCCA events as well as the drag. I was bummed not to make the Year One experience this year but I will be there next year. I still want to keep it a street car. I want subtle race hints because the exhaust gives it away.
