Default Wipers keep locking together at mid point...especially in rain!

OK...Yes I drive the sh*t out this 'vette and I'm going to. That being said, my driver side wiper seems to go over too far to the left, and then when sweeping back towards the center, gets caught by the right wiper in the center. I've tried the "Rain-X" on the windshield deal, but it didn't help. How can I adjust this problem?

I fixed this twice by replacing the blade arms. The arms get sloppy and wobble. If that does not work there is an adjustment that can be made to the travel shown in the FSM.

This Tech Tip may help with the problem.

Getting parts may be an issue but when this was written (2001) it was a popular fix.

Just read your article. Very interesting. Thx. for posting.

It's possible, but memphiscop might have the wrong wiper blade. I know that our cars are quite finicky and when an incorrect blade is used, nothing works right.

Great article!

I want to do this on my 87! I have an additional problem though... i have the Greenwood wind-sheid surround and MUST use shorter blades. Are there any shorter ones available to fit those 95-96 arms? I have to check what size mine takes but i think it is a 16 and an 18???

The only arms you can get now are the 94-96 arms with the different angle on them. The earlier ones are discontinued.

an excellant article, and the first mod i did to my 87, along with a new "1990" wiper transmission, no collisions since, light rain, heavy rain, mist, windy, crosswinds etc

I started having blade collisions (after a blade replacement) Went to the local Chevy dealership ordered new blade assemblies (waited for ever *ok it was only a little more than a month) installed the new GM blades and no more collisions.

I'll try this.....seems relatively cheap to fix the problem, and I like the idea of it being GM, not aftermarket......

Thanks...I'll let you know how it goes.

I realized I do have the newer arms, but the left side actually goes over the edge of the windshield. It needs an adjustment of the travel....where and how do I do that?

Pop open the rectangular mesh screen on the cover at the base of the windshield above the wiper mechanism. There are 2 small bolts that can be loosened and the arm travel adjusted. Going by memory from 25 years ago first time I drove my 84 when new in the rain. Wipers locked together on the freeway. It was a simple adjustment then.

I lost mine while driving from NY to AL Thanksgiving Sunday riding home in the rain. I ended up driving 6 hrs in the rain without wipers. It was OK while I was moving but it was bumper to bumper between Knoxville and Chatanooga. When they locked up, it stripped the arm socket out or finished it off. I havent driven much in the rain with the new (used) ones operating yet and what I see from this article I can expect it to lock up again unless I do something about it. It does look like there is more room between the new pair and its possible the old ones were not right to begin with.

Using arm assemblies from the later models seem to be the best and permanent fix here, I hate it as I just bought mine off an 87 I think. As for the adjustment write up in the other Article, I cannot see where the bolts are except they are under the grid. Anybody got a better pic on which nut it is or is it pretty obvious?

TIA!
