Can you all recommend any specific type of spark plugs for my 90 Corvette?
I am looking at changing them, but would like to know what the Corvette community recommends....go to PepBoys, Checker, Napa, Autozone, etc and they all recommend a different plug!
I replaced mine a couple months ago. Honestly, I don't remember what brand. I will tell you #2 and #8 are a b*tch. The ones I took out were 3 different brands. 2 was an original AC Delco, #8 was something different and the rest were Champions. Good luck.
I put these on my '91 L98 and they are the correct ones. It was the first times the plugs had been changed and the old ones were the exact same as the ones in the box pictured below. I bought them at AutoZone and their computers were right. Part number for the Delcos shown on the box is: 8#5 19145287 (I guess that's really two separate numbers). Don't forget anti-sieze on the plug threads and di-electric gel for the wire boot end.
My '91 FSM says to gap at 0.035 inches. Use the more accurate spark plug wire gauge with built-in bender over the disc gauge. I was using the disc that you see at parts stores and then read how the other type is more accurate. Bought the wire type and saw my gapping was not only very inconsistent, but off by 0.05 inches. It was also a PAIN when you had to bend the side electrode back and forth on your work table. The wire type has a built in bender - Sears website: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...echanics+Tools. Its only $2.
Good luck, it is a PITA on the L98s. Get a good swivel and a magnetic spark plug socket. A piece of rubber heater/coolant hose placed over the plug will work well in the hard-to-reach places. ALWAYS use your hand to start the plugs in the threads. You DO NOT want to strip the threads like someone here did recently. You may find removing the passenger wheel well will allow greater access to the passenger plugs. Driver side plugs are cake in comparison to the passenger plugs.
I agree with above. I just did the plugs in my 1991. I used rapid fire from acdelco. They work nice. I have used them in an 85 I have to. It didn't like anything else.
The OEM plug was ACDelco FR5LS. I have used these in my 90 for the past couple of years without any problems. Removing the tire and the innner fender shield on the passenger side makes it easier to change the plugs.
BTW, the plugs really aren't that bad of a job on these cars. The first time it took me awhile, but once you have it down you can easily do it in under an hour
