Default I'm back and going cogged!

Hi guys. Well, the market for hi po cars sucks right now and I can't shake the bug to work on the car. So.... I'm getting back on it.

I just redid the whole steering system (rack, tie rod ends, ps pump) and the car had the brake system done last summer (brake booster and master). The car needs a trans freshening, but once that's done, I should be good to go.

So back to the cog setup. I called ati today and they're making me a 74 tooth crank pulley. It's running me $660. It sounded like a smoking deal considering I've been quoted $1100 in the past. I figure that I'll be able to sell off my 8 rib setup for a decent sum since it has only about 1500 miles on it. Turnaround time on the new crank pulley is 4-6 weeks. It'll utilize a 30mm belt.

It's going to be interesting to see how the 30mm belts hold up. I'm probably going to try to run a 28 tooth blower pulley. I'd like to run a 26 but am not sure how it'll last. I also should change over to a manual tensioner from what I've heard. I may have to have something fabbed up on the tensioner.

After having two built cars but never really getting to my goals, I decided that I'll try to finish this one since I'm so close. I don't have much money to spend so I'm going to try to make the smartest choices about what I pickup. Hopefully this cog thing works out because I really want to get into the bottom 10's or high 9's.

I know what you mean; I put both my goat and truck on the market with no real hits. I get the occasional bottom-feeder but told them not to waste my time; I don't need to sell right now.

Anyway, glad you are back. I was figuring it would be a great time to meet up; probably around the Tustin area. I think a group of guys meet up every tuesday or so.

Let me know what you guys think.

Glenn, I live in Tustin, so that would work out great for me. Where do guys get together at and at what time. I'm pretty flexible as far as scheduling.

The car hasn't run the full quarter yet. I'm out of gear by the end of the 1/8 with my 3.73's and 17" drag radials. My trans doesn't shift to od at full throttle so I have some setup issues to address.

In the 1/8 it ran 7.30's with the t trim. The car is making at least 100 hp more now so it should be into the 6's (if my trans was able to handle it). With the cogs it'll make even more power because I'm only seeing 10lbs of boost currently. On one occasion boost spiked to 14lbs so I'm loosing a ton of boost to belt slip.

I'm going to change the tranny to shift at wot to od. I'm also going to install a converter in it so I can actually 60 foot decent. I currently leave off idle because I have a stock converter in it. I found an awesome 700r4/4l60 builder not far from my house that has built 9 second trannies similar to mine. Solving the trans questions (hot to get a trans to live in a low 10 second/high 9 second car) was also a reason for me to get back on it.

Can someone point out what 7.30's in the 1/8 translate to in the 1/4?

That sounds great; let's get Wayne in here as well and set a weekend up.

For me; probably won't happen until November though.....

IMO you will do better then the 11.39 that the above calculator shows. The reasons being, they assume everything is ideally set for each applaciation.
What I am getting at, your car is probably geared closer to a 1/4 mile track then a 1/8 mile track. If running street tires you were not able to launch at full throttle. This will have a big effect on the 1/8 mile, but not as much on the 1/4 due to traction not being a problem on the bottom end of the track. Also you will be in full boost etc.
Again, IMO short of running the 1/4 to see what it does, you would be better off using a calculator that will run mph instead of et.
But with all of that said, Ill bet you will be somewhere around 11.00-11.20 and with slicks you could get into the 10's under ideal conditions.

Yeah, I don't really think the et calculator was to accurate because guys trapping at 91 or 92 manage times similar to me with a more drag race type setup. My car is definately not setup for drag racing. I leave off idle; not against the footbrake but completely off idle. I also run on 17" drag radials. I think a mph calculator would be a little better. The way I ran the 1/8, I was all top end charge. Those numbers were with my t trim setup.

Once I get my trans redone, i'll take my car to run the full quarter. I'm making quite a bit more power now so it should be some fun.

I prefer to run at Irwindale in the 1/8 mile. My ultimate goal is 6.50's at 113. That would be low 10's at 140 in the quarter(using the conversion tables). I think the only thing I need to get there is to be able to get a little more boost and a trans that can hang with the power.

hey guys. Here's the engineering drawing on cogged harmonic damper. It will probably take about a month to get the piece so I have some time to get a cogged blower pulley and a few idlers with shoulders on them.

I'm running through 2nd gear in the 1/8 with 3.54 gears and 17 in. m/t,I can't see why your running out of gear with 3.73, must be some other issue.Get a good converter,a vigilante or yank with a good stall (I run a 3000)and it will make a big difference,
welcome back.once a gear head always a gear head.

yeah, that looks like the black mountain gear. I talked to that guy a while back. Those photos actually do help me get an idea of the idlers I'll need to complete this. With my setup I'll be using an ati superdamper which will not only be sfi but also probably help increase engine life versus a machined crank pulley with no damper.

High Power, I used to go through the traps in the 1/8 at close to 100. I'd imagine right now I'd go through at about 105-108. I'm running a 3.73 with a 315/35/17 radial, so I figure about 110 is about all I can do without spinning it hard. I did speak to trans guy and he said I"m loosing a little through my current converter but not too much. I will go with a vig when I work on this thing.

Yeah, not having a damper didn't thrill me either, that's why I was looking at Mark's setup, or machine something that fit over one. Which looks like what your doing.

When you get a quote on it, can you see what the cost on multiple version will be?

Perhaps we can get several forum member together on this.

Update.....

I haven't received the ati balancer, but it should be here any day now.

I did pick up a 27 tooth asp cog pulley. It is the one with the shoulders on it to help keep the belt on.

I also did pick up an idler pulley with the shoulder on it. Once again to help keep the belt from getting thrown.

Finally, I ordered a couple belts from Gates. They are 30mm wide. They probably won't be here until the end of next week at the earliest.

So, I may mess with the car this weekend and try to mock up the cog blower pulley and idler pulley. The cog balancer should be easy to toss on because I'm not going to be removing the hub, just the actual balancer. I may have to loosen up the rack a bit to get it in and out though.
