Hey guys,
What's the best way to setup nitrous with the 4+3 transmission? I'm only looking to run a 150 shot tops. Is there a recommended kit for this type of setup? Thanks in advance.
I'm not too sure the 4+3 could handle repeated hits of a 150 setup. The 4-speed portion is a Borg-Warner Super T-10 and that tranny by itself might handle the increased power.
The 4+3 was used behind the 1987 Callaway twin turbo Corvettes (RPO B2K) and the power output from that motor was 345HP and 465 ft-lbs of torque. The stock L98 in 87 only had 240HP and 345 ft-lbs of torque. In any event, the driveline (clutch, pressure plate and all the u-joints) would have to be in excellent shape to handle the increase in power.
I would not consider hitting the nitrous if the OD was engaged. While it did handle the B2K motor, the power did not come on like nitrous would.
A 100 shot may be a better deal but it's still a lot of power to put into the tranny, especially if it has lots of miles on it. The OD unit does have some weak parts although it can be strengthened.
Thanks for the response c4cruiser. I guess I need a little more info on how to setup a nitrous system with a stick shift in general. I know with an automatic you can set it for WOT and just go. It seems to me with a stick shift setting it up at WOT would blow the engine quickly since you are on and off the throttle while changing gears. Would some type of fogger type setup be good in this situiation? I guess I could have it setup to manully hit the button when in fourth gear, but I don't like the idea of only having that added power after I shift up through all of the other gears. Anyone here have nitrous setup on their manual car?

Put a button on your shift ****
push while in gear and out of tire spin territory, that way you have complete control.
I have an 85 with the 4+3 and i beleive the 4 spd can handle the extra power so long as you arent running drag radials=power shifting. The OD box however is very weak. So long as you arent on the juice engaging the OD I think you'll be fine. ( I beat the **** outta my manual and it still runs fine, the OD is another story)
yeah, from what I've heard from a few others the 4+3 is essentially the super T-10 transmission and is very capable of withstanding a 150 shot. I've done a search and see there are quite a few people with nitrous setups on a 4+3 car, I'd just like to know what kind of setup they are running.

I wound up mounting the activation button on my steering wheel. The on/off, or "arming" switch is located underneath the dash, just behind the diagnostic link. You can just see the green button in the lower left hand portion of the first picture below. Second pic is a little better.
Not sure about the the 4+3. I'm on my third 4l60e trans and third torque converter. I run a 125 dry shot. This time it's built to last though or so I hope. My Zex management unit has a wire that taps into the TPS sensor for activation only at 100% throttle (3.7v I think). I also have a switch on the inside that I can use to cut the spray on or off whenever I want.

thanks guys. That steering wheel button is pretty cool, since I already have the overdrive button on my shift **** I was wondering where a convenient place to put the nitrous button would be. Hey byebyeL98, at what gear do you usually engage the nitrous? Also what type of kit are you running?
When I had the 4+3 in the car (ZF 6 speed now), I had 4.10 gears (still have them). With street tires, I would only engage in 3rd and 4th; the tires would break loose easily in 1st and often in 2nd, depending on how soon I hit the button after shifting. With BFG Drag T/As, I could get away with a 2nd gear shot without breaking the tires loose.
I am using the NOS TPI kit (75/150 jets) with the injector plate that mounts between the TB and intake. I also have an MSD retard box that is activated when the button on the steering wheel is pressed (-2 degrees).
