Default Help identify EGR part #.

While attempting to diagnose some drivability issues on my '90, L-98. I noticed that the EGR valve (among other things) had been replaced by the PO. I suspect that an incorrect part has been installed.

The nipple on the EGR is considerably smaller in diameter than the inside diameter of vacuum hose that attaches(does not fit snuggly).

The part# is 045A (3 or 9, tough to see)E14 followed by the letters POS. Assuming POS indicates positive back pressure type. I know this model uses a negative back pressure type. Any way I can cross ref. this part# to verify?

In addition I found one injector that registered .005 ohms hot & cold and oil puddling on the drivers side, top center of the intake.

Winter plans:

Remove intake & valve covers. Replace the following:

Intake gaskets
Valve seals, inspect springs
Valve cover gaskets
8 Injectors w/ Bosch III
EGR valve
Test EGR Sol. for proper operation
Thermostat w/ 185 deg
Rebuild FPR or replace
Test MAT sensor.

Have I missed anything?

I plan on using Fel-Pro gaskets.

Thanks, Ron.

Not sure if the PN you're refering to is an AC Delco part. Easy way to cross reference is call an Auto Parts store that carries AC Delco parts and get the PN for that. The loose fitting line can be one of two things, either the wrong EGR or just simply a worn or oversized line. The L-98 has hard vacuum lines and the ends or terminations are usually soft. A good local auto parts will stock a wide variety of the Dorman end terminations for the hard vacuum lines in both straight and elbow or 90 degree style. Grab a few, as they vary slightly in size, they work really well.

Just as a side note. The EGR valve inlet, has the tiniest of holes! At first glance, I thought they didn't put the hole in, so I drilled it out! DOH! Had to buy another one. Talk about dumb....

I don't know how much mileage you have on your 90'. If you have head gasket oil seep, or valve guide wear causing that big old blue cloud in the morning, you might as well do the heads while you're at it. Tough job, but there's lots of references here.

Finallly, get the Fel-Pro top-end gasket set for your car. It will come with every single gasket for the job. TPI Plenum, Distributor, Water Outlet, Manifold, Valve Covers and even fresh Fuel Injector O-Rings.

I don't know if the previous owner bought the correct EGR valve, but can you post a picture of it?

The replacement EGR valve I bought at AutoZone also had a similar problem with the hose adapter, but IT WAS the correct part. It was stamped the right part number as on the original EGR (I verified this) and is the right dimensions for everything else EXCEPT for the vacuum hose inlet. What you will need to buy (if you find you have the correct EGR valve) is PN # 47432 which is a Dorman assortment of rubber vacuum connectors (I got it at AutoZone). It will attach the hard line (1/8") to the new EGR inlet size (5/32"). The correct adapter has the following alphanumeric code stamped on it in a VERY small font "6 MPC". You do not have to buy another EGR or new hard line coming from the EGR solenoid.

Good luck,

Jonathan

Defintely is not a AC Delco part, I believe the correct part # is 2145535 that replaces the original equipment part # 17113456

Thanks, I'm aware of this.

I will as soon as I get things pulled apart.

Hoping to get started on this project this weekend.

I'm going to attempt to locate an AC Delco unit for replacement.

That definitely doesn't look like an AC Delco EGR, I just installed one. And I believe it's also installed 180 degrees backwards too. The finish on a real AC Delco is much brighter.

Take a look at the original on the 87 and see how the hard line is routed, versus which way it's facing

Hope this helps. You can't go wrong getting a new one. BTW, you might as well replace the solonoid....
