At wide open throttle there is a 1-2 second delay before shifting into second, the motor just holds at around 5000 then it shifts, the trans. has been rebuilt and I adjusted the T.V. cable according to the manual. Any ideas before I take it in? It shifts fine otherwise. Thanx in advance, Sean. :)
I know a shift kit will allow you to change shift points and provide firmer shifts so I expect it will also increase shift speed.
You might want to verify that your TV cable is set properly, otherwise your line pressure could be too low and cause wear. If a shop did the rebuild and install it should be set properly though. If the part throttle shifts seek OK it likely is fine.
My 84' A4 just comes OUT of gear on a WOT 2-3 shift.
It feels just like pushing in the clutch on a stick tranny.
RPMs go outta sight and there is just no connection through the transmission.
After the RPMs fall down to around 2000 it hooks back up and will pull hard again.
It has been doing this for quite a while.
At less than WOT everything is normal, shifts ok, pulls ok.
I haven't a clue as to what could be causing this.
All of my experience is with the electronic version of your trans (the 4L60E), but I have found my 4L60E is very sensitive to fluid level. When I had too much fluid in the trans, it would hang up just like you describe. Now that I know, when I replace the fluid, I underfill it (as it reads on the dipstick) then test drive it with several full throttle shifts. I increase the fluid level 1/2 quart at a time and test drive until it shifts right.
Not be the bearer of bad news, but........
If your stock auto is not switching at ANY gear until a few secs into 5K,
check the fluids as posted before me, and then have the tranny looked at.
It should be shifting at most at a few hundres UNDER 5K, since it is an L98.
The only other thing I could think of is a custom burned EEPROM with a higher shift point setting, or basically the tranny's slipping. When it shifts after the 1-2 seconds of being at 5000rpms, does it easy into the next gear slowly, or shift hard and firm?
If it does it slowly, it still could be your fluid, but I'd still have the tranny checked oWhen my '85 is VERY cold (Just started up), and I floor it, it shifts from 2-3rd slowly (thus I never do that again), where I think the fluids are cold/thick and not viscous enough. Good luck with it though.
The shift is very firm when it shifts, if I let up on the gas a little and mash it again it will shift, at 3/4 throttle everything is fine just WOT. Thanks guys, Sean
