Hey all. Did a search but didn't find the answer I was looking for. My oil temp gauge stays on "100" for quite awhile in the morning after first starting up and driving off to work. It finally(15-20 minutes of driving) moves up to the first "mark", but never past it. Never, ever gets to the halfway "mark" on the gauge. I'm guessing(hoping!) my oil temp sensor is bad. I viewed one on Eckler's and it looks like an easy install. But where is this critter located on my 89,000 mile 1992 LT1??? Anything else I should know before I buy and attempt to install? Many, many thanks to all the experts here! I'm so lost without you guys!
B4 you do that...do your digital gauges match the analog? Does your fuel gauge actually reflect what's in the tank? My gauges have never matched and the fuel gauge reads 3/4 tank but will take 11 gallons to fill. I tried to get GM to repair back in '93 but end result was no match
they could not fix. Just my 2 cents.

Uh, I was asking about the OIL TEMP sensor/gauge, not the fuel gauge. I think you misunderstood my question, but thanks for responding anyway.

Uh no, what he is saying makes perfect sense. What he is asking is do the other gauges match what the digital readout is displaying? What does your digital readout display as far as oil temps go? Does the digital LCD readout match what the analog gauge is reading?
The '92 oil temperature sending unit is actually two sensors in one package.
It has three wires on it.
Two wires are for the digital oil temperature gauge, and one wire (with ground as the return) is for the analog temperature gauge.
Sound normal to me. Oil temps stay low unless your thrashing the car or making a really long trip. A 10-15 minute drive at reasonable speeds is not enough to get the oil temps very high. FWIW "halfway" represents an oil temperature well above 200 degrees. As has been mentioned, see what the digital gauge reads. Get a chance and go wail on the car for a while, get the RPM's up. Get the digital gauge to read about 240 and see if the analog gauge isn't somewhere near the middle. If it's not, then replace the sensor. If it is, you're good.
As others have mentioned, it's above the oil filter and pretty easy to change.
To quantify this for you some, I drove my car home yesterday and swapped over to oil temp right as I got home. The digital showed 190 and the analog was only half way to the first mark.
MY 92 ALWAYS READS LOW ON THE NEEDLE GAUGE, BUT APPEARS ACCURATE WHEN CHECKING THE DIGITAL READOUT, FROM WHAT I'VE COMPARED TO OTHER CORVETTES I KNOW OF LOCALLY. WHEN HOT, OR AFTER RUNNING LAPS OR AUTOX THE OIL AVG's AROUND 12-15 DEGREES HIGHER THAN THE COOLANT TEMP. I'LL BE CHANGING MY SENDING UNIT THIS WINTER TOO...

I've got the opposite issue, analog seems normal and the digital reads way to low.
Example on a 70 degree day it reads 44 degrees!
If I can find one I'm going to check all the connections tomorrow when I change the oil.
