Default Harness bars and The man!

I need to replace my seat belts and i have race seats so i naturally want race belts. I called The Ohio State Patroll (the man) and the officer was not aware of any law againts racing harnesses.

Does any one have experiance with these are thier some DOT approved and othjers are not? are these as safe as a normal belt?

I think the whole idea is that they're SAFER than a normal belt. Much less convenient. I don't see why there would be any law against them.

I wouldn't ever wear mine for street driving! It's much more difficult to look around. I keep it tucked down along side the seat and use the normal belt. Also keep in mind that race harnesses break down in sunlight and will quickly weaken. That is why most places require them to be replaced every two/three years. I store my harness bar and put a bag around the belts to keep them in the dark.

I wear mine on the street all the time, I've got a camlock so it's easier

It does wear them out pretty quick.
But they should be rewebbed frequently to keep the up to date.
The stock belts have a built in roller.

I can't say for sure, but I checked in to that and some places it is illegal!!! BECAUSE like aardwolf said to long to get out of! there is a write up in road race section or maybe it is even in my threads that there is like one kind that is street legal! I will look for it or else check through my profile on road race thread!
research first or they will get ya!

More importantly, you are changing the safety features of your car. Your insurance company might refuse to pay if you are a passenger are injured or killed. There is a great deal of research supporting the factory configuration. None supporting the aftermarket racing harness in your car.

So, in spite of it being at least as good and most probably better, I think that you would have problems with a claim. I can almost hear the opposing counsel for the insurance company laugh when you say that your belts were better because they are used for racing.

Good Point I work for My insurance Company so I will go ask a VP and see what they feel But i did not think of that

I put my kids in this car so safety is my number one concern if they will not be safer or at least as safe it is a no go

IF they are quality belts and IF they are properly mounted they are safer---but they are not legal. In most states, the man will write you up if he is in a bad mood because none of them that I know of are DOT approved. In order to be safer, you must wear the submarine strap and that is a little awkward for street use. Then you get into the question of head and neck restraint. Properly worn, the racing harness will hold you tight to the seat in an accident, but you head will continue at whatever speed you were driving.
IMHO three point harness' are a better solution for the street.
