I have an 89 vette and the ac compressor locked up recently and I dont have the money to buy a new one. So I was wandering if theyre is any way to bypass or delete the ac? I seen that theyre is a bypass pulley for models 85-87, but was told that it wouldnt work for an 89 corvette. So if anybody has any useful info please help . . .
yeah, for real, i aint got that kinda money right now, ill try to get around to it sometime, i aint got a penny on me right now, but i get paid tuesday so i will be able to get a bearing for it either wednesday or thursday and hopefully have work on it before next weekend.
If you can't turn the compressor shaft - outer hub of the clutch assembly - with the belt removed - it isn't the pulley bearing; the compressor is seized.
I used a shorter belt and the same tensioner with a new pulley. the belt I used ended up being 68 1/2 inches and I also purchased a ribbed pulley for 18 dollars 30 minute job start to finish. The pulley I used did require a little shimming and I had to grind the tensioner just a touch but it worked out really well. Total cost was 50 dollar. I highly recommend this mod
FYI, the a/c compressor by itself weighs a little over 15 pounds and I plan to cut down the bracket because it it used to hold other things so I cant just remove it. and in your case, you could always add the a/c back later as funds become available
When I removed the air pump from my 84 I fabbed a bracket and pulley for it. The A/C could prove more problemsom because of the belt tensioner. The biggest pain was the running back and forth sizing the belt.
ok the outer hub does turn, with the belt on, so im guessing it will turn without the belt on also. I am not going to be able to work on it this week though, cause of school and work, hopefully find time to get to it next week though. Thanks for listing that parts america site by the way to.
Well, then I don't know what you mean by locked up - Outer hub is bolted to the crank and when they seize, the engine usually stalls or they at least start smoking and make a god awful stink until it conks out.
yeah it smoked the belt pretty bad and made a god awful noise. And then it wouldnt start because it was locked completely up and when i turned the ignition it sounded awful. But then i removed the belt and fired it up and it started good so nothing wrong with the actual engine itself or nothing. I called a mechanic where i lived down here and they said that the compressor itself was locked up not the clutch? Or something like that. I couldnt get the bearing off of it, it does require a special tool after all.
Probably sheared the shaft if you can turn the outer hub. The only way to tell now is to remove the main hose and to check for compression and suction when turning the hub; ie compressor shaft. I don't think a clutch assembly will help you but to remove it, grab the outer hub with some oil filter wrench pliers and then unbolt the 10 mm nut. Pry off the hub keeping your hand underneath it to catch any shims. Pulley (which has a pressed in bearing) and Coil are held on with snap rings. Install in reverse order shimming the outer hub until there is a clearance of .020 inch between it and the Pulley. Note - if the compressor is shot, good chance you'll ruin a new clutch assembly the minute you crank it up (which I found out the hard way on my first car 35 years ago).
If the outer hub turns freely can't you just pull the electrical connection to the A/C compressor clutch and be OK??
im not sure, i dont know much about it, i think i might just remove the compressor completely though and use an bypass pulley from a later model s10, i think u can get one on ebay for like 40 dollars or so, and just modify it so it will work with my car
good news, i removed the compressor from my car and used an s10 ac delete pulley bracket, and it fit up perfect. Car is up and running and back on the road, whoot!
im not sure i bought it off ebay for 40 dollars with free shipping. I know someone that bought one that was to long on the backside of the bracket but still worked, they just had to modify it a little. the one i got worked perfect though. Look for a later model s10 pulley delete bracket on ebay. Ill check it out again and try and find it.
