Default 234/242 on 109 LSA Too much cam for 3:07 gears?

Is a cam with the following specs (234/242 on 109 lsa) too much for a 383 cubic inch street car with automatic transmission and 3:07 rear gears. Would it bog down too much? Could I cure it with more stall? Can't decide on this cam or the 230/238 with 109 lsa and LE stage 2. help!!

it will be fine with a good tune and abit more stall. What compression by the way?
I have a similar cam in my 383 and even tho i have 3.42 gears, it will putz around at any low rpm you want without any stumbles. no surging/nothing and my tune isnt even dead on at idle/low rpms If i had 3.08's it would drive NO problem what so ever!

You'll be fine with 3200 stall but 3600 is better suited for that setup, and plus its more fun! But if you dont race alot, just keep a lower stall speed, 3000-3200 is very streetable

I'm only running a 224/230 cam on a 112 lsa. 3.07 gears and a 2800 stall. I love the 3.07's because they allow me to dead hook with nitto drag radials. The converter stall will make up for the gearing for the most part. Might give up a hair in the 1/4 by not having optimal gears to cross the finish line at your redline but you will likely make that up by dead hooking on the start. Talk to member vic'89. Don't quote me on the exaxt gear numbers but I think he went from 3.07's to 3.73's and gained almost nothing in the 1/4. I believe he is running a 4000 stall converter though. A high stall converter and a fairly light car does not require a real low gear to run well.

stick to a 26 inch tall tire or better yet, a 25.7 inch drag radial and 3.07's wont hurt much at all. All depends on your power band and how fast you will trap in the 1/4 mile.

Either of those two cams should peak near 6200-6400 rpm and make around if not over 400whp with LE 2 or 3 heads. That will push my car to 119-120mph in the 1/4 and its 3450 with me in it. A vette i expect the same if not a touch more if they are lighter than my camaro. For my setup 3.42's are not quite optimal for all out drag car but for a street car its fine. Drag setup with 6200 rpm peak, i would need 3.90 gears. But thats for 119 mph traps. For my nitrous setup, i have same power peak give or take 100 rpms, but i trap 128 so 3.42's are very close to being great for this car with 26 inch tire.

As I see it the problem isn't with the duration but, instead with the LSA. I ran 230/234 with a 3000 stall and 3.07 gears and it ran fine with a PCMFORLESS tune. But, mine was ground on 113 LSA, not the 109 that you're considering. It's the CompCams XFI cam.

Idled extremely well at 850 RPMs, passed emissions here in TX (which ISN'T tail-pipe since the car is OBDII), etc.

I suggest you give Bryan a call on that cam because I've read that it becomes very difficult to tune a cam once the LSA tightens too much. Some, in fact, they won't even touch because of this.

Its hard to tune over the internet. You'd have to sit down and do it live in person. The overlap is tight but all it does it slightly throw off your o2 sensor so the rich/leaness is all over the map with stock settings. Tweaking those o2 parameters and raising rpm to 900 or so where that cam will want/need to idle, it should run just fine. There are guys running cams like that on 350's and a 350 wont eat as much cam as a 383

I see the OP is from bethlehem PA, and Bryan at PCM is an hour north of me in Butler, like a half hour north east-ish i think of pittsburgh.
IF you could get up there, he could do it, else there may be other tuning places around you closer. There is a EAST COAST SUPERCHARGING (or something like that) shop in new jersey i believe that could help you out. They do vettes

Either way i think PCM for less can do it. Telling them you have LE2-3 setup on a 383 LT1/LT4 they should beable to get that car working well. I know many guys went thru them for their LT1 fbodys. Madz28.com i think could do it as well.

I don't think so myself, run a little bit more converter..... plus, you have to consider that the 3.07 gears are actually a bit more gear with the 700R4 than I think most realize. Your first gear is exactly equalivent to a th350 with 3.73 gears in final ratio. Here's a few reminder numbers.

th350 with:

2.52 x 3.73 = 9.39
2.52 x 4.11 = 10.35

700r4 with:

3.06 x 3.07 = 9.39
3.06 x 3.33 = 10.18
3.06 x 3.45 = 10.55
3.06 x 3.54 = 10.83

When you think about it, a 700r4 with 3.45's is more launch gear than a th350 and 4.11's....

My point, with a 9.39 final, its enough gear for most street cars.

good luck with whatever you decide on !

The idle sounds great on my cam. I have a tune by Jesse Azzato, he lives in Saint Mary's, PA. I ran a 12.95 1/4 mile at 105 mph N/A. That is with the reworked 113 heads and rings that are about shot. When in neutral and holding the rpms at 4000 it feels like a hairdryer blowing up out of my valvecovers, although at idle I can't feel anything. I just bought a 383 shortblock with a 230/236 hydraulic flat tappet cam installed, it is a 110 LSA. I'm going to put AFR 195's on it and I feel sure Jesse will be able to tune it good.
