Default Flowmasters

Anyone heard, on the same car, old style Flowmaster 40's vs the new ones with the resonance reducing technology (can't remember the name).

I have the old 2 chamber style Flowmasters on my 84'.

THEY ARE LOUD AND RESONANT!!!
HORRIBLE to be exact.
I'm looking to replace them with something quieter.

There is NO fiberglas or material inside the Flowmaster to absorb sound.
Just a few baffles to divert the flow and they do very little to quieten the exhaust.

If you've got a good CAT they might be ok for you.
My cat has been gutted and with the Flowmasters it's difficult to carry on a conversation ot listen to the radio from 1200RPM to about 24/2500 RPM/
Right at the range you'll be running most of the time.

They are low restriction er....no restriction, though.
Pretty much they are just a can welded to the ends of your Y pipe.

I WOULD NOT buy them again.

You are referring to the Delta Flow Flowmasters, I haven't heard them on anything.

I have some sort of Flowmasters on my car. Thats right I don't know what ones! I love them, and resonance is not bad at all.

You can really cut the resonance with a manual. If I'm driving in pure performance mode it'll resonate quite a bit, but for short periods, you usually can't hear it over the whine of the ZF tranny and the motor thundering under the hood.

If I drive very easily I can manipulate it such that it doesn't resonate that bad. Just keep it below 1500 rpms or above 2000 and I'm fine.

I run the TPIS custom FlowMaster cat-back system. They are the 3-chamber "designed to reduce resonance".

Actually the 1,200-1,800 rpm resonance isn't usually so bad. It's much louder than the stock setup but then I have a custom front Y and RT cat to enhance flow. If I don't go with muffler elims next time it will be another set of the FlowMasters.

BTW, at 75mph and above it realy "hums" very nicely, sort of a slight pulsing sound.

Is there enough room and would the sound be bad if you just replaced the single pipe after the cat with a glass pack and then run open pipes out the back. I've had some on my old truck that sounded very mellow and were not loud. This would be much quiter than just running muffler elims (which is just a straight pipe). Would it resonanate inside? Just a thought.

Yep, i've got the old 40's right now.. that's why I'm asking what the new 40's sound like with Delta Flow technology. I have a feeling i'm going to HAVE to do something to my exhaust because the resonance was horrible before the 383 ... and I'm willing to be my car that it's gonna be at least 25% louder and more resonancy...
