Default Opti Firing Order

I am about to complete replacing the spark plug wires and want to make sure I have the firing order correct. I really don't want to go through this again for some time. I didn't know a better way, so I just took a picture.

Geez, I could have saved you a few pen strokes and a piece of paper. But whatever works.

Wow, that is perfect!! Thanks for posting.

Good news is that it looks like I got it right. I hope to not have to do this again for 20 or 30 years!! I think pulling the motor to chance the plug wires would be easier.

Tonight will be a good Advil night.

Make life a little easier and mark both ends of each wire with the cylinder number with a Sharpie.

It's alive!! I just buttoned everything up and it fired right up. It does seem to run much smoother. I'll take a short drive in the morning to make sure all is good. One plug wire was so bad that it literally broke in pieces when kinked.

1 1/2 hours?? Uhhh, no, unless I am a very poor mechanic, which may be the case.

If you are removing the opti, I would encourage you, if all possible, to go ahead and get the water pump and new wires. With all of the pieces that you will need to remove, that would be a good time. The job isn't that bad, but definitely take your time. When you feel frustrated, walk away! I had 4 or 5 walk away periods today, but being patient and persistent, the job can be done.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

To do a thorough job you're going to want to allow more time than that. I'd also strongly suggest doing the wires while you are in there. I have the same car as your profile and, having just had mine apart, I can't imagine doing it any other way. I used a set of Napa wires for about $80 I think. The fit was not perfect but acceptable.

Yes, these should be replaced as well(they are cheap and you can get at any chevy parts dept). I bought a seal puller from Harbor freight to remove the Opti seal for my sons '96. I had trouble getting the the WP seal out, so I just left the old one in since there where no tell-tale signs of leakage. On this seal, there is a recess in the timing cover and I've read that you need to use a high tensil strength screwdriver to "pry" it out. Easier said than done. The new Opti seal is easily tapped in for '95 and '96 models, and the earlier models are even easier as the seals are much smaller diameter(in fact you can remove old seal with just a screwdriver).
