Default LT4 Rocker Arm Recall

Apparantly early LT4's had recalled rocker arms. What was the problem? I bought my LT4 about a year ago, how can I check if they were changed or if they need to be changed? Does anyone know which VIN numbers were affected?

I bought my LT4 new in June and it was a May built car. The problem had been corrected by this build time. You can go to any GM dealer and ask them to pull up the information on their computer system and perhaps get them to print you a copy. I remember reading about this in 96 but don't remember enough about it. Just know that my LT4 was built after the problem was corrected.

here u go something for everyone to enjoy....

cut and pasted from : http://www.hashmarks.com/techtips/rockerarmrecall.htm

The early LT-4 engines had 2 roller rocker arm recalls. They were due to "improper loading" on a pin that retains the roller section and it could back out under high RPM. In the second recall the first replacement rockers part #12551311 were also recalled. The second and final rockers part #12557779 were used check with your dealer if your car falls within these numbers. The 1.6 aluminum roller rockers were manufactured by Crane for GM. For the aftermarket these rockers are advertised as the Crane Gold units.

The first recall (recall number 96-C-07) involved these VINs:

Regular production From: 5100052 through 5102717
Grand Sports From: 5600013 through 5600055
The second recall (recall number 96-C-07A) was extended through these VINs:

Regular production From: 5100052 thru 5111116
Grand Sports From: 5600012 thru 5600363
So if your Corvette's VIN does not fall within these ranges, you shouldn't worry about the rocker arm recall action.

Just to be sure, however, any GM dealer should be able to give you a warranty repair history of your Corvette if you supply them the VIN. Some dealers charge for this service, however.

What is the legal obligation of Chevy/dealer to fix this? I have an LT4 that falls into the recall range. Do they HAVE to fix it for free? Even 6 yrs later?

They will do it even six years later due to liability implications. The last thing GM wants is to be sued for product liability. Anybody remember the Pinto? Since it will only cost them $400 or so parts and labor to fix your car, it is easier than paying a lawyer $500/hr to defend against your lawsuit. I don't believe they have an actual legal obligation but simple finance dictates that they will. Just remember that a factory recall is not something that an engineer figured out after production, usually something specific happens to someone to justify the recall.

Jeez Curtis! It's one thing after another eh? Have the dealership run a complete campaign on your guy's' VIN #'s. Don't check just for the RR's. Goodluck to you guys

Well, my car isn't an LT4, so checking my VIN won't help. The only way to check the RR's would be by some identifying number on them that could tell the dealer if they should qualify or not for replacement.

Simply call your Chevy dealer's service dept, or GM's 1-800 customer care number, and they will tell you if your VIN has any outstanding recalls or not.

They cannot tell you what *has* been done, but they will tell you if recall work has *not* been and needs to be done.
