I opted to put guide plates in with my Crane roller rockers. My builder said he lost an entire motor because the rocker somehow jumped off the right area. I figure $30 or so is good insurance for my new motor.
The self-aligning rockers should not be used with guide plates as two guiding forces can conflict and cause premature wear of the guide plates and the pushrods, even when both are hardened. The rubbing will also raise engine temps. You can used stronger or hardened pushrods without guide plates when using self-aligning rockers.
I believe the LT1 uses self-aligning stamped rockers as do the later L98s. If so and your stock motor has guide plates, they are not hardened (nor are the pushrods) and they have no function during engine operation. They were only of use during engine assembly to hold the push rods roughly in position.
