Default Guide Plates

I opted to put guide plates in with my Crane roller rockers. My builder said he lost an entire motor because the rocker somehow jumped off the right area. I figure $30 or so is good insurance for my new motor.

Of course your Crane's are NOT self-aligning (that would create conflict with guide plates) and the guides and push rods are hardened.

BTW, were not your stock rockers self-aligning?

My stock rockers were the stamped steel ones. I'm upgrading to the 1.6's. They are are the ones with the little guides on the tip of the roller.

You shouldn't use self-aligning rockers and guide plates. Your supose to use one or the other.

If the new rockers are self-aligning, then do not use guideplates.

The self-aligning rockers should not be used with guide plates as two guiding forces can conflict and cause premature wear of the guide plates and the pushrods, even when both are hardened. The rubbing will also raise engine temps. You can used stronger or hardened pushrods without guide plates when using self-aligning rockers.

I believe the LT1 uses self-aligning stamped rockers as do the later L98s. If so and your stock motor has guide plates, they are not hardened (nor are the pushrods) and they have no function during engine operation. They were only of use during engine assembly to hold the push rods roughly in position.

Ok, so which do I do:

1: use the current setup for now without guide plates and change to Pro Magnum's or something later on down the road adding guide plates

2: sell my self aligning and buy pro magnum's or something with guide plates and have the motor put together that way

????????? Need a quick answer guys.. gotta order tonight if I need new rockers!

I'd just use the self-aligning ones since you have them.
