I have an 85 model and I am going to go from fuel injection to a carburetor. My question is this: What do I need to do to the 700r4 transmission to make it shift right since the computer will not be hooked up? Any advise would be appreciated!
You also need a TV adapter arm for the carb so it has the proper geometry for the cable.
I had a problem with the "adapter" from Holley so watch the geometry. You will find the diagram online with the proper setup laid out. There was not enough travel with the thing so I had to use one of the kick down holes on the carb. If you are not real familiar with the setup of the TV cable find someone who is to help you on this. Improper adjustment will cook a trans in no time
There is no kickdown cable on a T700.
The TV (throtle valve ) cable controls all trans operation which is why it must be set up and adjusted correctly; otherwise as stated bye bye trans.
The lock can be done with a manual switch ( which you have to remember to turn on/ off ) or a 4th gear pressure switch inside trans which engages lockup automatically when in 4th gear only
If you need further info on the setup, I can snap a couple pictures of my carb setup so you know what it should look like.
The tranny will shift properly in all gears, but the torque converter just won't lock up. I have yet to get a lock-up kit but, in the autumn air, my tranny never overheated.
Contact the company of whatever brand carb you are going to use, they will advise you which two pieces you will need to make this work. I did this on my '87 El Camino daily driver to get rid of the worthless Quadrajet and the computer, I'm getting 24 mpg on a 305 with a Holley 600 carb. I also had adjustment problems with the Holley pieces so when I ordered the converter lockup kit from Raptor they advised me to do the usual tv setting procedure then add two more clicks out on the cable. I've put about 5000 miles on the car with no trans problems.
Bow Tie Overdrives make an adapter that works well. Their stuff is first rate. I have a switch to lock my converter. With a legitimate 3800 stall you need the lock up. I only use it when I am on the freeway or chassis dyno. I had this done when I had my trans built so I am not sure how to do it.
