My car is acting starved for fuel at idle. Ive replaced the filter twice-- recently with no crud in it. it runs a little weak and wont idle by itself. at start up it fires once or twice then quits to the sound of the starter motor slowing down. Could my pump be shot? how hard is it to replace?
I can't diagnose your problem, but the pump is not that hard to replace. You remove the filler door (4 torx screws), remove the rubber lining around the cap, disconnect the 3 fuel lines, remove ~ 10 13mm bolts and the whole thing just pulls right out of the tank. The pump is only held in by a bracket that wraps half way around it some kind of thingy that the tip of the pump slides into. There is one 2-wire plug that simply clips on. I did pulled my pump in the parking lot of my Army guard unit this weekend thinking that it was inop. Of course, it was not. Good luck!
As posted before it is one of the easiest things to do on the vette. I'd say make sure your vette has been standing for a while to let off any Fuel pressure though. Make sure you go and get a Haynes manual, as it goes into pretty good detail in removing the Fuel Pump too. I replaced mine last year for the first time, and it took me about 2 Hours to do (Took that long because the new fuel pump was a bit different, so I had to change some wireing for the pump, but the new one came with instructions on what to do).
A FP gauge on the Schraeder valve will tell you if you have adequate FP and if it drops as you increase throttle position.
Also consider that rough idle and low power are symptoms of a clogged cat. A pressure check before the cat will tell the tale.
If you do the fuel pump have three rubber nipples (from Auto Zone) to cover the fuel lines as they tend to drip fuel forever once opened. Also, pull the small black connector below the mounting flange and clean the three contacts as these tend to oxidize over time. Replace the pickup screen along with the fuel pump.
