Sorry aobut posting this in C4 tech ... just need some quick help and I know you guys are good ;)
Friend of mine has an '89 cutlass supreme ... was running fine this afternoon. Sits out side for a couple hours and tries to start it ... and it sounds like 3 of 6 cylinders are working. TONS of black smoke coming out the back (running extremely rich .. practically a filling station behind the car). Pulled the codes and got 35, 44, & 53 . IAC, lean exhaust (WTF?!?!), and high voltage.
I tried unplugging the O2 sensor to put it in Open Loop mode... no luck. Tried unplugging the IAC valve .. no luck
Any ideas?? That makes 2 cars down at our house out of the 4 .. not good! lol!
The lean exhaust should be a clue. If the computer thinks the engine is lean it will richen up the fuel. Check the engine temp sensor. The fuel air mixture goes very rich if the computer thinks the car is cold. MAF could be bad. Really rich mixture can toast the converter.
Did it throw a code? If it did, that may help.
Also, My parents have an 89 supreme SL with the digita dash. They told me it flickers and goes out for hours at a time now. From the Vette side, I think maybe it's a cold solder. Wonder who I could ask? A lot of those cars came with a standard dash (speedo etc). I was thinking about just buying them one of those if it would plug up and interchange. Anybody know where I could go to ask?
thanks
Ok, this is really odd. Twice today, after sitting for a while, it runs fine for about 1-2 minutes.. then all the sudden dies. Try to start it up again, and it runs like poopie.
Went and talked to J-C-5 at O'Reilly's and he said to check the plugs. If one is wet, then it's a fuel injector. If they all are wet, then it's the fuel pressure regulator. So we checked them (only 3 of the six because the ones in the back are HARD AS poopie to get to), and all 3 that we checked were wet and had MAJOR carbon build up on them. So we took out the fuel pressure regulator tonight (or at least what I think is it - 1.5" circular metal piece in the line of the fuel "in" line (before it gets to the injector rail).
So we'll head over in the morning and see if what we pulled out is actually the regulator and see about getting a new one.
If I remember correctly to get to the rear plugs. Take out those dog bones on the front between the engine and the radiator. Then you can tilt the engine forward.

Have you checked your coil packs to be sure they're all putting out. If one goes bad you loose two cylinders. This happened on the daughters 89, and that's what was wrong with it. Check one cylinder on each coil pack for spark. Be careful these have plenty of juice and can hurt you.
FIXED IT!!!!! It was the damn computer. I knew it HAD to be a sensor or the computer because of how it would just randomly die and go to poopie and then an hour later start up and do the exact same thing!
WOOHOO!!!!!!
So, that proves to everyone, that it's not always mechanical stuff, it could easily be the computer that is the root of all the problems.
