If you know you want to go the way of the carb, I can suggest Edelbrock's Performer dual-plane intake and a Holley 750. I don't know exact #s on the carb but it has an electric choke and vacuum secondaries. Stack a moroso 14" x 2-2.5" drop-base air cleaner on top and you should have very few issues with clearance. You'll have to use a hex bolt instead of a wingnut as it would scratch against the hood if you did.
With some persuation of the hood springs and some ingenuity, I managed to sneak in a 3" element.

USM HSR, miniram, or TPI. I will leave carb recommendations to others.
If you aren't going to mod the motor, I'd put a TPI back on. Nothing else would FEEL as fast. And, I bet that would be your least expensive option as well.
I used a Edelbrock Torker 2 intake and a barry grant Mighty Demon 650 ( Same dimensionally as a Holley) drop base air cleaner lid and 3 inch K&N with a K&N t filter top. Lightly rub the hood. Be sure to use a return style Fuel pressure regulator if you stay with the factory fuel pump. I have a spare TPI set up with most of the parts if you are interested.
