I'm very close to redoing my pipes and I've noticed that aluminized pipes are about 50% cheaper than SS pipes. My mufflers are aluminized and have a lifetime warranty. So I figured just to run aluminzed pipes throughout.
Re: Anybody ever have aluminized pipes rust on them? (Fastguy)
At least use SS bolts..... they will save you a LOT of headache in the future. I had to drill out 2 or 3 bolts on one of my collectors (driver's side before cat).
Re: Anybody ever have aluminized pipes rust on them? (Raysur)
The SS is worth the price, and yes I have had aluminized pipes that rusted. I have even painted my exhaust pipes with high temperature paint and it didn't make any difference in longevity.

What did the '84 come with, stock? I have had my car for 16 years and the factory exhaust system is "untouched". My guess is that it is aluminumized. What ever it is, it's still hanging tough. Stainless steel, ceramic, titanium, and others may last longer, but what do you want to pay? And how long DO you want it to last?
Re: Anybody ever have aluminized pipes rust on them? (Raysur)
Question should read "Anybody ever have aluminized pipes NOT rust on them?" Stainless is the way to go if you plan on keeping the car as long as possible. Corvette stock exhaust is stainless from manifolds to mufflers with the exception of the catalytic converter and the muffler internals. The muffler casing is stainless. Tips and end cases are regular steel. There are different grades of stainless and yes, even stainless steel can rust.

Aluminized pipes will rust. On my winter-driven cars, I get 2, sometimes 3 years from my dynomax intermediate pipe. On my IROC, with the exact same intermediate pipe, it's got ever so slight surface rust after 3 years. The aluminized hold up great in cars that stay out of the salt, but if you take short trips with the car, the condensation will rot the aluminized pipes from the inside.

I'm always on the highway and there is no salt here:lol:. I guess I could be alright.

dynomax intermediate pipe
I always saw Dynomax pipes as steel, not aluminized. Every one I saw rusted also.
All I can say is I lived in Va. for 6 years after putting REAL aluminum pipes on my 79...and to this day, their is no rust. I know there's not a lot of road salt in Va except the rare times it snowed/iced...but come on here, I'm not talking about dynomax junk either!
Re: Anybody ever have aluminized pipes rust on them? (Raysur)
Raysur, Aluminized pipes generally look good when new, then they tarnish or dull out. Dont try to polish them, this removes the aluminized coating and the pipes will rust.
If looks matter I would go ( and did ) Stainless Steel pipes polished or not. Its going on a Corvette!

I plan to paint them black throughout just like my pipes now.
