My auto 87's engine recently siezed up from a part store giving me the wrong dipstick, so I am needing a new engine. I allready have a superram intake and melrose headers. I have about 10-12k to spend. I would like to purchase another engine/heads that will fit what I allready have, but also want to go big and powerfull. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanx
I'm not trying to cause trouble here but I'm wondering how this dipstick deal went. You poured in one quart of oil after an oil change and the dipstick read full so you stopped???
This doesn't help at all I understand. I just think there's a story in there somewhere. If I were in your shoes, I would stay within the horsepower limit of the stock rear end or you will be scattering half-shafts all over the road. It helps to know what gear your car has before selecting a cam & converter.
i never change my own oil, I do almost everything else, but oil is no fun for me and not very expensive, not that dumb to just put in "1 quart" and I do plan on beefing up the rear end and tranny
OK, good enough. Your car is an automatic so it came with the weaker rear end. If you are planning to swap it for a Dana 44, that would be stronger. Horsepower wise I would shoot for 500hp at the crank. The AFR 195 heads would be sweet. H-beam connecting rods and a Callies forged steel crank would be my choices. 383ci is a nice engine size that should help get into the 500hp range. Mahl forged pistons and a hydraulic roller cam that would work with whatever trans/converter combination you plan out. Sounds like you are planning on using your stock engine block.
I hope that I can still use my old block, i haven't torn the engine down that far yet, i've been tearing everything out of the engine compartment and am going to get rid of everything i don't need, clean up everything and fix all the minor stuff I can find. All I know now is that the engine will not turn at all. I'd be happy with anywhere from 400 to 500 hp. What block would you suggest if mine not salvageable?
They offer a 350cid, several 383cid options, and even a 396cid.
When you consider how much it will cost to have your original block cleaned up/machined (assuming it's still usable, of course), plus the cost of replacing high-wear items (pistons, rings, etc...), the cost of going with a new or remanufactured short block makes a lot more sense in most cases.

They are putting together a 421 twin turbo motor on my account.
Great customer support
They are building my blower-ready 383 short block for me right now. Great communication with Jason. Its costing a tad more, but its exactly what I want. 4-bolt, one piece main seal block, 4340 forged everything, O-rings, gapless rings, my choice of roller cam, etc, etc, etc. Cant wait, Im gonna hammer that thing.
As stated above, its probably cheaper than I could have done even with reusing my old block and building it myself.
Unless you have done extensive work to this car you can dump it for parts, take your 12K over to the for sale section, and grab one that is already done. There are some deals here unless you are in this for the hobby alone (as I am) and like tearing into things it doesn't make much sense.
Save yourself some trouble
Just my $.02
P.S. - I am confused about the "wrong dipstick" thing as well
If you like tinkering ...go short block and put it together yourself. If you like power ...get the largest displacement you can afford. Think long and hard about the camshaft and heads. Do alot of research.
You can get some great deals if you do your own work. If you don't then expect to pay 2-3 times more to have someone else do it. Thats if they are trust worthy! If they're not then 5 times or more if the project even ever gets completed. Buyer beware!
John
no offense, but if you have 12k to spend why don't you dump the 1987 c4 and get in to a c5 or a totally modified c4 at this point of the economy?
+1
There is an 01 Z06 on another forum that is only $15k. It is killing me I am not in the market...
Great deals on built cars are everywhere right now. Like previously stated, you'd be better off buying someone else's loss unless you want to build for the sake of building.
If you are determined to build your car, buy a crate engine and put your intake and headers on it. Then get it tuned. Pretty straight forward.
