Default wheels, wheels, wheels

I will soon be purchasing wheels for my 96. I've seen the pictures of the Z06 wheels on C4s (good thing). My choices are: Z06 wheels, ZR-1 wheels or wheels by Complete Custom Wheel in Daytona. I actively autocross the car, so I'm not too sure how much the unsprung weight difference will effect the handling. Any suggestions?

I can tell you that John's (CCW) wheels are MUCH lighter than any of the other choices (or less expensive in the case of the Z06 wheels).

They look really good on the car too. :D

I was told I got the "style" points at the first autocross that I had them on the car.

Thanks. Are they really cheaper? I got a quote that they were more expensive than the Z06 wheels. What size are yours?

Mine are 18"x11" and they were $1,700/set.

They can also be re-built if you should booger up a rim. John will put a new ring on for about $100.

The Z06 rims are Magnesium, hard to get and can't be repaired (easily at least). I know people who went to great lengths to get a second set from GM to use for the race-tires. They had to sign an affadavit that said they were stolen to get them from the general (and they were paying for the darn things out of their pocket!)

Thanks a bunch, Joe. A couple more questions for you...

Did John build you race wheels or street wheels? Do you mainly drive the car for track events?

Ok I 99% sure that Z06 rims are aluminum. Forged in 01' & cast in 02'. No comment on what I had to sign & swear to to get mine. :p: I will say it wern't easy.

Did John build you race wheels or street wheels?
John only builds 1 "kind" of wheel. Mine are mainly for the track. I have 3 sets of wheels for the car: 1 street, and 2 track sets (one with REALLY soft 165 compound and the other with 285 compound.

Do you mainly drive the car for track events?
This car is driven in both environments...heavily.

I can tell you that my AFS wheels weighed in at a hefty 37 lbs/ea for that cast aluminum. My OZ's (while they look very good) weighed in at a hefty 43 lbs/ea. The forged CCW's were only 22.4 lbs/ea. That's a pretty hefty un-spring weight reduction. I think the Z06 wheels are in the 30 lbs/ea range.

Cast wheels can't come anywhere near the lighter weight of a true 3-piece (unless they are Magnesium) because they need to have a pretty thick outer area for the tire to mount on. Many times, there are casting imperfections and there will be pin-hole leakes through the casting. On a 2 or 3-piece wheel, the outer "rings" are 1/8" thick aluminum spun and formed into shape. You can't beat them for strength, and repairing them is as easy as pulling the bolts, taking them apart and replacing the bent ring.

Try that with a cast wheel sometime...

I can tell you that after researching all the choices of 3-piece wheels, that John was about 60% of the cost of his nearest competitor (Kinesis) and Fikse wants about $3,800/set for the same thing.

Thanks for the useful info. Joe, do you have or know where I could find some pictures of C4's with CCW's? Their website doesn't have any.

Is there a website for CCW? I was wondering if they had a site.

Thanks

It really is a personal preference thing. I can tell you that there are many more people who like them. I'll bet I've sold 15 sets of these wheels just by 1) having them on the car at an event, and.. 2) John's prices being as reasonable as they are. As a matter of fact, you are the first person I've heard say anything derogatory about them...

I couldn't see spending $3,800/set for wheels that I only use for racing. These are hands-down the cheapest 3-piece wheels you'll find brand new. John's customer service is 1st-class. These centers are cold-forged and tough as nails. They have great ventilation, and work well on the car.

And, you gotta know that they work pretty good and are reasonable in price when lots of Motorola Cup and Speedvision GT teams are using them for racing.

Just remember that opinions are like **** pores...everyone has one and most of them smell. I don't judge you, so please don't judge me.
Heh I guess they work if you're... oh I'll hold my tongue ;)
You would have been more politically correct just to say nothing than to infer that they would work if I was what? Black...Mexican...a Low-rider??

I don't have time for small minds or bigots.

I've seen these wheels on lots of Xer cars and they look good on them all. At least now I know should I ever decide to get really serious in Xing.

CCW wheels are great. I have two sets. One set is 17x12 all around and the other is 18X12 front and 17X12 in the rear. They are light, repairable, look great, and cost less than many with great service. I drive it on the street and auto-x the car. I need a camera to post some picks.
