Default Dana 44 Shims

Anyone know where I can get me a set of Outer pinion bearing shim set?

I purchased a Motive Gear Dana 44 IRS rebuild kit, and not all of the shims in the kit is of the right size. The bearings were correct, but the shims looks like they belong to a regular Dana 44.

Called up Randy's ring and pinion, and was told to use the crush sleeve.

When changing gears, what are most of you using? Are you using the crush sleeve, or shimming the preload to the outer pinion bearing?

Thanks for the link Top tech!

There's actually quite a variation of gears supplied by various vendors for the D44 and there's a few different choices of shims, collar or crush sleeve. Your ring and pinion should have come with the appropriate collar or crush sleeve if that's what it needed. The last couple Dana "branded" gears that I've had have used a collar that's about 5/8"-3/4" thick VS. the "crush sleeve" that's provided in the bearing/seal/shim pack that most vendors sell as a service package for the D44.

If you bought your "gear kit" new you need to ask the vendor if it's not with the package which you need.

Early D44's used the shim packs and the later factory builds actually did use a collar/crush sleeve but not similar to the one in the bearing/shim/seal kits!

Thanks WVZR-1, great information.

On the gears, What I have is the Viper ring and pinion, and it came with the collar, I thought it was a crush sleeve.

The casing was a early Dana 44 case with 3.08 gears in it.

The bearing kit is from Motive Gears, the shims were all the wrong size, they are for a regular straight axle Dana 44, even though the box is listed for a Corvette Dana 44.

So, what I ended up doing is cutting down the collar to the size I needed to set the preload on the outer bearing. Seems to be a good fix.

Thanks all for your help and information.
