Default coolant-flush

my 96 LT1 has 17000 miles i bought it in nov 2007 with 10000 miles on it my question is with the coolant, when i checked the reserve tank today it was filled to the right level but i noticed brown-like sludge on the inside wall from the liguid level to the top. should i be concerned(is this normal)is there anything i should use to flush the system? is there a way to see if this sludge build-up is in my block? any info would be appreciated

I'd flush it, just to be on the safe side, and change the coolant every couple of years. It's easy to unbolt the overflow tank to clean the crud out of it.

You are now officially a victim of GM's failed Dex-Cool coolant experiment. There was a thread recently on coolant choices, search for it, read it, learn it, live it. Don't use any replacement coolants made by Prestone! You need to flush out your cooling system and start over.

Check out that thread so we don't have to write it all over again.
