MY "INST REST" LIGHT IS ON AS WELL AS MY LITTLE GUY WITH THE SEAT BELT. I WAS WONDERING WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO TURN THE LIGHT OUT OR WIDTH OF BLACK TAPE TO USE. I have a 1990 Corvette.
I had the same problem. You have to remove the sensors that are attached to the frame sand the corrosion off of the frame apply dieelectric grease to bottom of sensor replace sensor then reset code. There was a thread on this topic a few months back with the steps and reset procedure to get rid of the INF REST light and seat belt light. Do a search. If the sensors are bad they will have to be replaced to clear the lights. Or you could go in and take out the bulbs
This happens on alot of 90s mine also a few years back. Before doing any work on the INFL REST system DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY! The sensors are located on the frame rails close to the firewall. After removing them take a Dremel tool or small grinder and clean the paint and corrosion off the frame rail where the sensor sits and sand the bottom of the sensor also. Apply some Dielectric Grease to the bottom of the sensor and frame where you grinded then reinstall the sensor. I also put a star washer on the bolt when reinstalling to help make a better ground. You will need to re set the lights and clear the code. Mid America sells a little code clearing tool for $20. If cleaning the frame and sensors don't work then you have a bad frame sensor and i'm not sure if you can get them anymore from GM Pipe p.s. the frame sensors have a OHM spec to test to see if they are ok
And when you disconnect the battery, you should wait for about 10 minutes or so before working on the sensors.. That will allow any residual voltage in the airbag sensors to bleed off.
The pigtail connector for the frame sensor is down in the footwell area. Peel back the carpet down where your feet would be if you were streched out. It's a small yellow colored plug with 3 prongs in it. I've heard sometimes that these plugs come apart but not often. I have the OHM SPECS here if ya need em. Pipe

I have a 1990 with the same problem also. There was no corrosion on the right side and I ohm'd the sensor at the pigtail and was per the FSM but I was throwing a code 41 besides the 26. A dead short to the control panel and/or the DERM is gone as you cant check with a multimeter after that pigtail from the sensor as the batteries in the meter may activate the airbag. In my case the "lites stay on" until I get around to pulling the bulbs.
UNCLEBILL yep a code 41 indicator lamp circut, shorted to battery or ground. Hmm usually the DERM isn't the culprit. I wonder where it's shorted at? It would be nice to track down the problem instead of pulling the bulb. Pipe

Yes I would like to know also; but how do I check for a bad circuit if I cant use a multimeter? I have the bare basics in this matter.
I know ya can OHM the Frame Sensors but not the leads coming from the DERM cause that could blow the bag. I gotta dig into this a little further. Ill check out my FSM.Pipe
