Default '93 Horn Buttons Not Working

How does the air bag remove from the steering wheel? I don't see any screws to remove. Need to find out why my horn buttons don't work.

Disconnect your battery first!! There are two torx head bolts that come from behind the steering wheel one each side. then the air bag unit will come out. There is a small yellow two pin plug to unhook then it will come out.Pipe

jrod it might not be your horn buttons not making your horn not work. Set off the car alarm and see if the horns blow then. It could be the plastic connector down inside the steering column. It gets brittle over time and breaks and the wire from the horn buttons don't make connection any more. Pipe

The horns work with pke and I set the alarm off and the horns are working... any suggestions on why they won't work any other time?

I think it's the connector down in the steering column. The horn wires go to a plastic piece that looks like half of an inline fuse holder with a spring attached. The part that breaks is the part it connects to. Looks like the other half of the fuse holder (push and twist to lock) sticking up through the column. I think it was $20 to $30 bucks for that little piece of plastic. I replaced mine and the horns worked. There is a special lock removal tool to hold down parts in the column so you can remove the snap ring to get to that plastic piece. It's pretty simple to get at it. Only 1 snap ring and 1 small wire ring. If ya need the tool I have it and you can use it if ya want to. I could mail it to ya. Pipe

AT LEAST A HALF AN HOUR BEFORE DISCONNECTING AIR BUG FROM STEERING WHEEL! I cant stress this enough, it can blow up in your face as it is a capacitive discharge style bag.

Had this same thing on my '91. I had the steerting wheel puller and spriing compressor tools already so it was a quick job.

Before doing it though, RTFM!!! There are HUGE safety considerations with the airbag, including simple things like how to place it on the bench once you get it off. Failure to follow these directions could make for a bad day... Pull the airbag fuze, disconnect the wiring (they have a safety lock holding them together) and then there's two torx screws that go in from the backside of the wheel. After that you can pull the wheel and then the lock ring and there will be the broken horn cam.

Take care

Is this a job for the dealership to do? I don't like to cause additional problems trying to remove the airbag. Are there any special instructions to reassemble the wheel and airbag?

It's not to bad jrod like we said disconnect your battery and let it sit awhile before doing any work on it. Maybe your local parts house can rent ya the tools. It's a pretty simple fix guy. That cam piece slides over the steering shaft and the rest of the stuff about an hour at most. Pipe

1) Disconnect the battery
2) Pull the fuse for the airbag
3) Disconnect the SIR connection , its under the drivers side near the steering column. The Sir connection is the air bag connection, 2 yellow wires with a connector, usually there is a white tag with SIR written on it attached 2 the 2 wires.
4) Wait at least 20 minutes after following the above and you will be fine failure to follow the above and chance of your air bag going off.
5) There will be 2 or 4 Torx Bolts (30) depending on your year at the rear of the airbag which when pulled out will allow you to remove the airbag....G

I removed the air bag! Pipe is right - the plastic (white) piece that connects the horn wires is broken. My next question is do I need to remove the steering wheel to get at the plastic piece or do I need the special tool Pipe described earlier?

You need to remove the steering wheel to replace the plastic "tower", but you don't need any special tools besides a steering wheel puller.

Thanks for the help! That was successful! Too bad GM engineers can't design a few parts more solid than a half cut plastic straw!

jrod loosen the steering wheel nut. Then use a steering wheel puller to pop the wheel off. Then remove the steering wheel nut off the shaft. If you have an extra set of hands to take the place of the lock removal tool you can get them to push down on the INFL REST coil assy. (looks like it has a spring coiled up inside it) and remove the snap ring. Then slide it off the shaft and let it hang to the side. A flat washer is next then a small wire clip. Then slide off the shaft lock (round metal piece scalloped around the edge. Next is the broken horn cam it also slides off and there is a spring under it. Re assemble in reverse. After it's all back together then you can connect the wire with the spring on it back into the new horn cam. (a small push and twist) GOOD LUCK Pipe
