Default 84 distributor

are there any performance distributors that will work on the 84 with the cross fire injection? i called msd and they said they dont make any that will work, but i have an msd ignition control box they said will work with the stock one. but i still want to know if there is an upgraded distributor since auto zone sold me an msd they looked up and said would work so now i gotta trade it in.

Save your money. The stock item is fine. I'm running the stock system on my '84 (see avatar) with good results. What is your reasoning for wanting to change what you've got?

Use the stock distributor and upgrade it with better internal coil and module. Like MSD 8501 or Petronix PNX D8000

Unless you have more displacement (like up to 383), very high compression, a cam, and other mods, the stock distributor is going to work fine. A box like the MSD 6A or 6AL is not going to provide a lot of improvement on a stock motor.

Get a good cap with brass terminals, good plug wires, and the Pertronix module, you should be fine on the ignition side. The stock coil will work for a street car. You can go to the Accel coil if you like but unless your stock coil is shot, it won't make much difference.

An ignition coil will only produce the voltage necessary to jump the spark plug gap. Your stock HEI will produce much more voltage than it does now, it it were necessary. High performance ignitions have the the capacity to produce more voltage than the stock ignition, but won't do so until the need is greater than what the stock ignition can produce. With a lowly Crossfire, you aren't even close to needing the voltage the HEI can produce. Send your money to me. I need it more than Auto Zone or MSD and it will do you just as much good if I have it instead of them. I'm running the stock system on my '84 (see avatar & sig) with good results.

I do have to say though that a "loose" dist. can ruin your day. If anything I would say to inspect it for how much slop is in it, and maybe consider a stock replacement. The MSD and other aftermarkets are not going to get you anything more, but maybe a lighter wallet.

I've been known to go there too.

Thanks guys. High performance ignition systems have their place and uses, but if I could get a royalty on the money wasted on unneeded ignition components, I'd be a millionaire. The mystery of the unseen and misunderstood electrons of the ignition system are the cause of unfathomable waste. Too often the reason for buying performance parts is something like "i dont really have a reason for changing it, someone just said i should get some msd ignition stuff going on in my car so i just went out an bought some parts,". Incredible!
