I had this transmission problem and then the next day after it started the alternator went out. I figured I'll work the transmission problem and then worry about the alternator. I checked some connections and adjusted the TV cable with no luck. I got to browsing some posts and read about some weird problems coming up when the alternator went out that included transmission problems. My problem is that it won't shift out of second gear until the rpms are insanely high (haven't done it but a couple of times just for troubleshooting purposes).
Question is have any of you experienced this type of problem resulting from alternator failure? I found a post that mentioned something very close to this. I think it's more than coincidence that the alternator went out at the same time.
I can't wait to get the alternator swapped out tomorrow and find out.
Also, have you guys had any luck with the O'reilly Ultima remanufactured alternator? It comes with a lifetime warranty just like the Auto Zone Duralast new but is about $30 cheaper and, being Christmas season, every penny counts.

It can happen. If the diode trio goes out you are making AC current. This can cause sensors to do crazy things. Also a low battery without the support of an alternator can cause some pretty strange anomalies.

What year?
If it is 84-92, then no chance. If you have a 93-96 then low voltage could possibly cause a no shift condition.

It's an 88...damn. Well, I gotta fix the alterntor anyway. When I have adjusted the TV cable by (once by the Hayne's manual and again by the Manufacturer's instructions) It does change the shift points and almost seemed like the original problem was shifting between 1st and 2nd and then when I adjusted it by the Hayne's manual it seemed to have problems from 2nd to 3rd.
It works fine in 2 going from 1st to 2nd but in drive and overdrive it seems to have trouble going into second but will eventually kick in when rpms are high enough. It almost seems like it skips 2nd and catches 3rd but as soon as you catch 3rd and back off the gas it just revs.

One thing at a time I guess.
Run a search on my name for trans info. It sounds like the 3-4 clutch pack is shot. Typical for an older 700r4.
Likely rebuild time.
