Finally took my 79 . (Has a 1993 383 lt1 engine and new Chevy Viper T56 trans) for a ride last night. It started when i put my foot to the firewall(I have to adjust this) So I am really excited and start driving around the block-It was working really good-hard pedal from a high performance pressure plate.
So i get brave and take it on the open road. Man this is great! Im cruising, shifting ect. Then I am in the median ready to turn and start to loose clutch pedal pressure.
I cant get the car into gear and no clutch pedal. Well there is a little at the bottom and start pumping to maybe create some pressure. Nothing.
Go home get tools-get back to car-no fluid underneath car. Resevior is empty. Alright I need to rebleed. I cant get under to assess bleeder withgout going back to get a jack. What the heck I filled the resevoir with brake fluid and started pumping the pedal alot the pedal became rock hard and the fluid in the went down half way. I saw bubbles in the resevoir. I could not put the black rubber thing that goes in the resevoir back without it overflowing so I just put the cap on. And drove home. What at huge difference with a 6 speed then auto.
I used a mity vac to originally bleed the system. Maybe I didnt do it right. So what happened-did I have an air pocket in the system that didnt come out until I actually drove it? So I lost pressure. Filled the resevoir with brake fluid , pumped and hard pedal again.? Your expertise please. Do I need the rubber thing(i dont know what it is called) or can i go with just the cap? Need your expertise.
This T56 does not shift as nice as the ZF in my 94.
Are you using a known good slave cylinder? Some of the rebuilds had the piston cup installed the wrong way around. Suggest checking for leaks particularly at the front of the slave cylinder. Also check the master cylinder pushrod area for fluid bypassing the master cylinder piston.
The rubber thingy under the cap is a gasket to seal the system & keep moisture out.
The next time you have a no clutch problem suggest starting the car in first gear, you can up shift without damage if you catch the syncro's at the correct rpm. Just slip it into neutral if you need to stop then restart in gear etc.

Mcleod throw out bearing. Found it dripping from bellhousing last night. Nightmare.
Don't think it is the release bearing. The fluid doesn't go there. If fluid is dripping from bellhousing, and the fluid level keeps dropping. The slave is leaking.
