I have an 84 that had muffler eliminaters on it when I bought it. I replaced the eliminater with the stock mufflers in hope to get rid of that "garbage truck" sound. It didn't help, actually the drone/reverb got worse. I wonder if the cat is hollowed out creating this horrible noise. Has anyone hollowed their cat and ended up with this condition?

A rodded out cat will have an effect on the sound. Take one out for a look, and if it is, get a set of bullets.

The honeycomb core inside the converter on my '87 cracked and started to make an annoying rattle. I gutted it and put it back on. I really didn't notice any major increase in drone/reverb, but the exhaust smell was really bad pulling in and out of the garage. There was absolutely no performance increase with the gutted cat. I took it off after a few weeks and installed a new magnaflo cat. The new cat did slightly lower the exhaust tone and the car runs well with no difference in performance.

i have an 89, the po supposedly gutted the precats, so you are saying no sound diff with the gutted cats vs. non gutted.
yet the 2.5 inch carsound y pipe with cats while bigger was quieter overall that the stock with cats,
i thought it would be freeflowing hence more sound, comments?
