I put back together an 85 and I can not get it to fire up. I do have spark and fuel. Everything is plugged in that needs to be. What can be the problem here. I also checked all of the fuses.

Is this a crossfire injection car or port? How do you know you have fuel, did you check it at the schrader valve or can you verify that the injectors are operating. I guess what I mean is, pull a plug and see if it is wet. If not your not getting fuel. Uh, crank it for a bit before you pull a plug....
It is a HEI, Also yes it is trying to start as it has some backifiring going on. I pulled the number one plug and it is wet with fuel. I also tried to make sure that it is TDC and i plugged the spark plug hole with my thumb but I am not getting any air to blow out.....Is this a major deal? What could this be?
uh, no air at all at anytime when the engine is being cranked? Yeah that could be a problem! I am REALLY hoping that you just didn't crank it long enough to catch the compression stroke.
Here is a great write up on how to set it by one of our forum members. He went from never having done it to writing this in about 3 hours. It's not tough you just have to be careful. Scroll down the page to where the pictures start.
If you cover the #1 spark plug hole with a finger or thumb and turn the engine by hand....are you telling me that you have NO compression??? If so, you have the valves TOO TIGHT!!
You should be able to turn the engine by hand....line up the mark on the balancer and the '-0-' pr even 6 degrees when you have compression on the #1 cylinder. You should then line up #1 spark plug wire on the cap and match the position to the rotor.
The valves were too tight AND I was 180 degrees off! Man o man, I am glad it didnt fire or I would have ben many pushrods!
Anyways I got it to fire! It was too late to fine tune because of the noise level and my shop being in a populated area. I will fine tune tomorrow. Thanks for the help guys! I am greatly appreciative of the web site and the fast responses.
The guy I got the car from said he was wanting more power so he put a hotter cam in it and when he went back with the TPI and new chip, the ecm wouldnt read the cam. I just ordered a close to stock replacement cam and put it in for the stock chip so that I didnt have to worry about the chip. I also dont know much about the ecm and how it works so.... I am use to a 350 and a carb! At least my car has a HEI.
I still have a bunch of work to get the car up to par. I am at the rat rod stage right now. It is primered so I am thinking of a good paint scheem. Any ideas? It was originally the light blue color.

Well again this is a matter of opinion, but I have found complex paint schemes just don't really look good on Vettes. If I were to repaint my car I would do it like this I think.
A good color and a good paint job always looks the best IMHO
