My '91 is running on the orginal ECM. It is a realy low mileage car. It was in storage for some time. I am going to start driving it more now. Question is should I purchase a back up ECM and keep it in the car with. I have heard bad things about them drying without notice. Any thoughts?

Just keep a bottle of mineral water handy. Seriously, more ECMs are replace in error than go bad. They are not particularly troublesome. You could tow a trailer with all the spare parts that could possibly fail. Even so, the ECM wouldn't be near the top of your list.
Well, I've been through 4 or 5 in 60,000 miles, but I don't have a '90 and at least 3 were replaced under the original warranty. My other GM's have fared better, but then the warranty has gotten progressively longer (it's like 10 years out here now) on the later years and I think a '95 Gran Prix was the last GM I actually got a warranty ECM replacement for and that was when it was 6 or 7 years old and I wasn't going to argue with the Dealer (they were wrong - it didn't fix the problem). I've accumulated spare parts because I've replaced the wrong stuff unless it's the alternator - speaking of which, I'd be more inclined to purchase that and then keep it in the back (along with a breaker bar and 10 and 13 mm sockets or box wrenches) - particularly if you plan on taking a trip of 100 miles or so.

Yea - a CS144 is next on my list mine still does ok but at idle it is a little weak, 12.5 v. ECM - i guess i will just risk it unless I find one for a good deal.

I'd be more worried about the fuel pump on a car that's been sitting around for a while.
I put about 350 miles on it since it was setiting up, so far no fuel pump issues. When it sat up I would try and drive it at least a couple of miles per half year to keep the fluids moving. I did notice a small leak at the master cyl. maybe it will self correct - yea right. I guess if the fuel pump goes it will not give any warning? LOL
