86 Tranny Problem
I have a friend with an 86 auto and he says his tranny doesn't engage once it's in 3rd or OD - like it's in neutral. He says 1st and 2nd work fine. Any ideas what the problem might be?

Never mind! I found the answer in a previous post. The 3-4 clutch pack or shift selenoid are out. Think its time for a rebuild.

If it shifts and acts as it went into neutral it would no doubt be the clutches. If it fails to shift at all the solenoid would be suspect.

A 700r4 or 4l60 does not contain any shift solenoids, so the diagnosis looks terminal. Likely rebuild time.

Eh, seems like I have been trying to help folks out here and seeing one thing, thinking another, and typing something yet different. Brains a little foggy but it's not an excuse for not reading.

Check the linkage on the side of the transmission, make sure it didn't come loose or fall off.
