Default 84, 4+3 trouble.

currently running carb. set-up on my 84. several times while cruising in od., it abruptly dropped out of od. t.v. cable is still connected to trans. but not to carb. could this be the cause.?
I really only want od as a 5th gear to cruise with. Can the tv cable b removed, thus eliminating the auto downshift ability. If anyone has expertise to explain procedure, I would greatly appreciate it.

running Dart 200 cc heads, Weiand Stealth, Holley 670, Headmans, No cats, Mallory, 1.6/1 roller rocksers & Crane. Runs nice otherwise.

I have never got my head around as to how the TV cable functions in a '84-'5 4+3 v the electronic only control of the later models.
'84 wiring diagram shows the same ECM control to the O/d relay.

A theory ( someone will kick my #@&* here )
The ECM turns the overdrive on/off but the engagement /kickdown is controlled by the TV cable direct from the throttle whereas the later models use the TPS input into the ECM .Check this out for difference in operation

I'm with you in assuming ( never assume) that in the default "retracted" position the TV cable should be doing nothing.Only concern is if TV in valve body has an effect
on line pressures like the TV cable in the auto trans.

As a note ; have you checked the plug on the O/d relay or the solenoid connection at O/d?
Could be vibrating loose or losing connection at speed.Early models are also prone to bad insulation causing shorts.
