If it is not bad enough the car has been running a little bit rough, I get into it tonight and noticed there is a split in the tinted roof panel. When I bought the car it came with 2 tops..1 solid and 1 tinted clear. I have always heard stories about jacking or lifting a car with t-tops to unlach them but I have in my 22 years of owning trans ams and z28s never ever did. Recently I put the smoke top on and thought why did these people never use this?
Whats the deal with the tops are they touchy? What will iot cost me to fix it? I do beleive this is after market. I think the original was glass right?
Don't think so - generally they just come unglued from the frame and then here, in CA, one of our Courts ruled that GM was negligent for not making them strong enough to withstand the weight of a manhole cover thrown from an overpass (onto a C3). I'd guess it was damaged while stored or perhaps more probably, some kid in your neighborhood bounced a basketball off the top of your Vette.
The original roof panels are not glass. They are made from an acrylic material. If you have a small crack you might be able to repair the crack with a special adhesive made for acrylics. I found some on the web that has helped minimize a crack from spreading on my '93. If it is a large crack you'll probably need to get the panel replaced. There are several places that replace Corvette roof panels. I don't have any recommendations. You may want to search the forum. Occasionally you can find new or decent used panels on ebay. I've seen then run from $350 for used to over $1,000 for new.
Thanks guys...I actually thought about drilling a small hole at the end of the crack to stop it from spreading, and then filling the seam with a clear epoxy. Will see.
Thanks again for info

What year? If you are close enough I might have a deal for you.
Don't feel bad. I had my top crack from sitting overnight. Parked and the next morning it was cracked. There are a couple of places that have re manufactured ones. I got mine from ecklers. Got the new top and sent them my old one for a core. Years do matter. 84 to early 86. I think it is 86L (late) to 90 or 91 I don't remember off the top of my head and then it is 90/91 to 96. Some one will chime in with the correct breakdown. The main thing is there are yr span specific. So pay attention to the year you have.
