Finally sorted !! Spike caused an overheated connector into the VATS Decoder Module. Luckily, the module itself survived. Everything going back together today.
accustomed here to some minor lightning...was taught to always do the ground cable last, ignored those little zaps, not aware of any problems after doing hundreds ("not aware" may be key phrase )...could be time to address with a "spike stop" device of some sort (need to sleep on that)
any idea/recall what other actors may have contibuted to your major spike (ign switch "on", all doors/etc open, huge aftermarket stereo in "on" mode, etc) ????

Driver's door was open when I was switching the switch off and on while trying to get the second flasher to work. Switch was mounted to the negative terminal, as on my '84.
Sorted announcement was premature. Started fine, drove it about one mile, everything fine, shut off to pick up something from the boat. Refused to restart. Trying to run on a couple of cylinders. Plenty of fuel. Going back to the electrician.
Where did you buy it? I've been wanting one for a while. Saw one on ebay, but passed on it since it had some sun damage.
Got it from a member of the crossfire forum in Denver who had it lying around for some time. PM'd him and bought it. It was shiny/tacky in original condition but spraying with matt black made it look AOK.
It was made by Bruno's Corvette in Studio City, CA. Apparently the owner died and no one else continued making them. Too bad.
I know this is an old thread, but, I just registered to thank all of the people in this thread. This seems to have fixed the problem on my 88 of occasionally not reading the key. Mine was easy, I only needed a 4.7k resistor.
Next up, fixing the lazy headlights and then decide if I want to tackle the rear wheel bearing.
