Unbolt the fuel tank door...
remove the rubber protection from around the nozzle..
unplug the wiring harness...
disconnect the hoses...
unbolt the bolts that hold on the filler neck....
pull out the filler neck and assembly which has the fuel pump attached..
replace the filter when you put on that new pump and inspect those wires that are connected to the pump inside the tank.
It can all be done from the top. I did mine last month. Easy job...
with buddylee432. You don't have to drop the tank. I did mine a couple of years ago (1st time ever doing this) and it only took be about 1/2 hour. It was easier than replacing the old mechanical pump bolted to the side of the block on the old Chevy's
Also ANY form of manual will help you and keep you out of the S**T.
I'd make sure to have a new gasket and a new strainer on hand. I replaced the fuel pump on my 85 about a month ago. The gasket came off in pieces. The strainer was brittle and crumbled trying to take it off the pump. Otherwise its a straight forward one hour job.
