I happened to have an extra seal, but as I look at it more carefully, I don't see any possible way to get it over the shaft without tearing it. It is the correct seal. The shop manual says to use tool J-39087, but I'm a little shocked at the price of $55.71 (for something I'll never use again) - is there another way? Anyone have one I can rent/borrow?
Several years ago I did the same thing as well...I made a 'tool' out of a piece of plastic-funnel shaped that was just slightly larger than the 'lip' of the drive and fit the splines tightly. I just pushed the seal over the funnel that spread it enough to 'pop' on to the shaft it seals. Then tap it home into the cover.
It is nearly impossible otherwise as the inner seal will fold toward the outside and destroy the seal...guaranteed oil leak (been there).
For the life of me, I don't recall the item I started out with, but I think a new tip of for instance Permatex RTV would be a good basis. I think another forum member used garden hose to finagle it.
I used a magic marker pen top (which was tapered) as a start; split the lid longways along one edge and placed it over the shaft, then slid the seal right on... Good luck!
Thats the link and method I used on both of my builds. No leaks and still have the 'tool' in my toolbox. I ruined two seals before doing some research on the web and finding the site linked above. Took one try with the modified dry erase board marker.
I did mine with the engine out of the car and the seal in the timing cover. I just used a pick to gently move the seal over the wp drive.
What do you guys use to remove the old WP seal. I tried small screwdrives and they just bent. I did not like the idea of using a hammer, so I just ended up leaving the old seal in there, since there was no evidence of oil leaking at the WP seal.
