Intermittent problem while driving car stutters as if starving for fuel, check engine light comes on, step on it, engine revs but still feels sluggish. When I stop, turn the car off and start it back up it runs fine.
I need help with this quick, planning on going to NCRS meet with the wife and would hate to have a breakdown on the way and hear the "I told you so's"
forgot to mention that when I try to restart the car sometimes I get a strong un buburned fuel smell
Thanks for your help

Re: 85 L98 STUTTERS WHILE DRIVING, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT (corvetteden)
corvetteden,
you need to pull codes. When something goes very wrong in the fuel injection system the ecm will turn the "Service Engine Soon" light (SES) and set a code in memory. This code can be pulled to help figure out what is going wrong.
To pull codes:
Ignition off. Unbend small paperclip into a U shape. Find ALDL connector, it is just above your right knee while sitting in the car. Black connector attached to under the steering wheel, may have a cover over the connectors that will pull off. It is not within the dash, it is readily available at the edge of the hush panel.
Found it? OK. There are two rows of female connections, a top row and a bottom row. Take your paper clip and insert one end in the top right and the other end of the paper clip in the hole next to that hole in the hole to the immediate left of it. Got it? OK. Turn the key to on, but not to "start". Do not start. Watch the SES light. It will blink out codes.
The SES light will start with code 12: blink - blink blink. It will do this three times. The next set of blinks will be the codes, each three times. When the codes are done, it will blink 12 again and start over.

Re: 85 L98 , Code 33
That is MAF sensor problem of some sort. I don't know enough about the 85's to help. Usually first step would be to check the MAF power and burn-off relays, but I think the 85 has a seperate module for this.
Re: 85 L98 STUTTERS WHILE DRIVING, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT (corvetteden)
My '85 did the same thing. It turned out to be a bad MAF. An intermittent problem is difficult to diagnose. My car only had about 18K on it when the MAF went. Two things to try. First with the engine running tap on the MAF with the handle of a screw-driver or something else. See if the engine starts to act-up. Second, if this intermittent problem happens again, unplug the connector to the MAF, the computer will then override the input with pre-programmed info. The engine should smooth out when the MAF is unplugged. I ended up buying a new MAF and that cured the problem. The cheapest place for a new Bosch MAF was TPIS for about $180. Good Luck!!!!
