Just stock? As long as the bores are ok and it can be honed and re-ringed, I bet you could do it for less than 1000. Just depends on how much your willing to do yourself and how many parts you want to re-use.

I probably have $3500 in mine and I still need a lot of valvetrain parts and gaskets!

If you don't do your own work you are probably looking at $3-4K on the conservative side. That will get you about a stock replacement. You are getting about a $1200 bottom end so if you do this yourself you can get away cheap.

If I would pull my own engine and drop it off, I had 2 shops quote me around $1,600.00 for a complete stock rebuild on my 89 L98 including heads...WW

Why not do a crate engine? Put yours on a stand and keep it incase you ever want to put it back numbers matching but Jegs sells a stock replacement 4 bolt main for 1600.00 that has a 100k mile warranty, My mechanic said figure 600 for labor to pull it and put a new one in it.

Are all crate engines carburated? If dropping a brand new engine in the car is cheaper then its something I will consider.

Nope
You can get a crate that will take your TPI system for relatively short money. Sometimes even cheaper than a straight rebuild depending on how much machine shop work is needed. Most definately easier and quicker

This brand new crate engine comes with a GM warranty and is covered for 3 years or 100,000 miles in applicable GM vehicles only.

Thanks I was looking at that engine also. so it is easier and quicker to put my tpi system on it? Id have to have machine work done to it? I am also concerned if my headers will fit on this. I have heddmans on my car right now. If I get this engine, will I have to ditch them?

Are there any crate motors in that price range that are fuel injected?

Its just the block and heads you put your own Intake and Dist on it
So yes this motor can be used with TPI or Cross fire

Just call the company with your year and they will sell you the correct engine for your application.

I would call a Professional but from what i understand it is a factory replacement for the 85. and no unless you wanted to make sure your intake was not warped you would not do ANY machineing on the block or heads.

Open Crate, put on dist and intake, put in car drive

If all yours is doing is smoking you may only need to install a new set of valve stem seals. That can be done with the engine in the car and isn't too big a job.

Worn seals is a common problem.

if it's been smoking for a long time, I would pull the heads and have a machine shop clean all the valves and do a valve job. The valves get pretty encrusted with burned oil carbon deposits and can rob you of about 30 HP due to reduced valve air flow.
Usually these short blocks are good for around 230,000 miles, and the timing chains are good to 150,000 miles.
If you have way under that, I would recommend that you change intake manifold gaskets and valve seals and see what happens.
If it doesn't reduce it by a lot, and you have ultra high mileage, it's the rings.
