Default 1985 Digital Dash HELP!!! Please

OK Guys, I'm about to throw in the towel and install analog gauges. But I don't want to. I like the digital dash.....when it works.

I pull the dash, check everything over. It all looks good. Reinstall, fire it up and it works.....for two to three days. Flicker.....flicker.....flicker and back to dark. Lather, rinse, repeat. Same thing over and over and over. I swear I have had this thing out of the car at least 30 times, and I'm getting sick of it.

I have checked everything that I can. I have made EVERY repair listed on www.batee.com. Re-soldered a buttload of joints. Everything looks great. No popped capacitors. Replaced the little harness from the power supply board to the main. Hardwired the pins connecting the two boards together.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a ground problem somewhere....but where. Yes, I have checked the ground on the back of the head. Pulled it off and cleaned it up....

Anybody have an old one with junk LCDs I can play with?

Happydad is on to something there with his comment on grounds. Keep looking.

My 86 also had three ground wires screwed into the driver's side of the block above and forward of the oil filter.

One of them went to the chassis too.

HA HA!

I think I got it! But only time will tell.

I pulled the cluster out (yet again), soldered one wire each to the ground wires on the connectors, ran them through the firewall out to the block.

Sounds like you sucessfully eliminated the need for the (probably faulty) G201 ground. This is the one hidden carefully someplace in the vicinity of the drivers footwell and which provides a ground path for the dash backlighting circuit, among other things (like the Cruise control..).

Good luck finding it. The FSM isn't any help - it's Listed but NOT shown in any diagram. Officially it's supposed to be "Behind the I/P, near the LH side of the steering column". Yeah, Right.

I found the one (apparently) in My car behind the plastic door opening trim piece at the front of the door opening, just below the door lamp switch. Making sure of That gound point cured both an unsteady (at times) dash illumination level And a cruise control that would sometimes decide not to work...

Most certainly from '84. #25076600 - 25076603, US/Canadian with/without cruise for the four part numbers.

Although I am in the UK, I work for the US Government and receive my mail through the Military Postal System. Items sent to my APO box need to go via USPS and are charged US Postal rates from origination to the ZIP 09468 APO in New York City. Even from the Northernmost areas of New York State, Priority postage to 09468 shouldn't be more than $20 including insurance for $300.

Are the LCDs good? If so, I'd offer $100 plus postage. If the LCDs are burnt as it seems from your description, I'd be willing to pay $30 plus postage as the electronics are unknown. I received one that I'd payed $85 for knowing the LCDs were burnt and it turned out this cluster had been submerged for quite some time and virtually nothing was salvageable, so I'm a bit more cautious now.

Thanks.

No problem, redrose. I understand $30 sounds like an insult. It wasn't intended as such. If you ever do take a look and decide you don't feel like messing with it, I'd happily you the same $85 plus shipping I paid the toad that sold me the useless one. As long as it hasn't been under water, like this one had, the electronics are worth $85. As I said, more if any of the LCDs are good.

Good luck with it.
