I don't think so.. at least the last time I went through for E-check (August 2001) I did not see any mirrors on the floor or anyone looking under the car.

I have quite a few friends with highly modified Impalas here in the Chicago area (GO HERD!) and none of us have ever had any sort of visual check. If the car passes IM240, they don't even peek.

Here is a pic of the hood and engine compartment. These pics are not the greatest because my wife messed with the camera and made some adjustments that I didn't notice until I got home.
