Re: aluminum flywheel? (Pete89)
Living in Oz, I'm not the best person to say WHERE to buy one but Mcleod, Borg Warner, Fidanza, TPIS & Kurt White (I think) can supply aluminium flywheels.
Kurt's e-mail is KNJW1@aol.com, for contact details for the others maybe someone else here can help.
I'm of the impression that you need to be careful to make sure the flywheel either suits an internally or externally balanced motor.
I have a cast iron aingle mass flywheel from DRM. Having a definite performance bias in what I want from my car I am very happy with it and will not go back to a dual mass. Be advised that your gearbox will be quite a bit noisier with the single mass, both at idle and at certain part throttle rpms (the latter doesn't seem to be experienced by everyone with these setups...). Using a sprung clutch disc will lessen the gear rattle you will hear with this setup a little but will not eliminate it.
The more I hear about the single mass flywheel the more I tend to believe that one is in my car. My car has a gear box rattle at low idle. Doesn't matter if the clutch is in or out either. I get to find out for sure next week when the spec II goes in.

HTH
no rattle here with the aluminum setup (It is machined to locate the throwout bearing the proper distance)
You reduce paracidic loss. The engine uses horsepower to turn that heavy flywheel (beleave me a dual mass is heavy!!!!)although a heavy flywheel makes it easyer to move the car (with the aluminum flywheel you have to "feather" the clutch more) as soon as you let the clutch out that heavy flywheel robs power. It's also why drag racers use lighter wheel's for every pound you take off of the rotating assemblys (be it the flywheel or car rims or driveshafts) its like removing 2 lbs.

Gee, thanks, now I have another reason why I should have gone for an aluminium wheel instead... :jester. (Happy with my current setup but if I redo this part of my car, I will be using an aluminium flywheel next time...)
Glad you replied, now things make a bit more sense :).
Red I know your plight I had a TPIS conversion with a ram clutch disc it sounded like a rattle snake on speed!!!!!The SPEC flywheel is as quiet as stock.
Hey Pete, I have a brand-new 12# Fidanza aluminum flywheel that I need to send back to TPIS since I can't use it with the engine I am building. I paid $450 back in August and TPIS requires a -20% restocking fee to return it. I will let this go for $450 - 10% or $405 if interested. This saves you $45 + their huge handling fees of $15 for a total savings of $60. Let me know if interested. I also have a TPIS 7QT road race oil pan if interested that I can make the same type of deal on!!! :D :D :D
